Will Euros Lyn Direct The Upcoming Doctor Who Movie?
Submitted by Rich Johnston on July 2, 2009 – 6:04 am (10) comments

Hidden at the bottom of a recent BBC piece PR was the news that the British Broadcasting Corporation are planning a Doctor Who movie, probably for 2011, starring David Tennant in the role, while Matt Smith will continue to play the character on the television.

Expected to be written by Russell T Davies, while Steven Moffat becomes showrunner of the TV series, there is very little detail revealed as to what kind of movie it will be.

Well, we may have an idea of how it may look. Bleeding Cool has been led to understand that Euros Lyn has been approached to direct the movie.

Lyn, director of Doctor Who TV episodes such as Girl In The Fireplace, The Runaway Bride, Silence In The Library and next week’s five part Torchwood series, The Children Of Earth, has gained a reputation on the show as having a distinctive vision and working well with cast and crew. However his work on Fear Her and Tooth And Claw was considerably criticised at the time. He will be filming the last David Tennant episode of the series as well as the infamous upcoming regeneration scene.

He has also directed episodes of Casualty, Jane Hall, Cutting It, All About George and Belonging. This would be Euros Lyn’s first feature-length and first cinematic directorial gig. Recently he compared the recent Torchwood shoot as being longer than most feature films and very intense.

Don't believe it but, if true, RTD would feel obliged to one up on the S4 finale and have a showdown between Adric, Borusa, Cybermen, Daleks, Earth, the Fendahl, Gallifrey, Horus, the Ice Warriors, Tegan Jovanka, K-9 Mark IV, Logopolis, the Mara, the Nestene Consciousness, Ogrons, Peri, the Queen Spider of Metebelis 3, the Rutans, the Sontarans, the Thals, UNIT, Varos, WOTAN, Xeriphas, the Yeti, and the Zygons.

    Don't be ridiculous...

    you forgot the Slitheen :P

If we seem awful flippant about this it is because there's been constant rumours about Dr Who since it came back. Sells papers, apparently.

Stranger stuff from the BBC has made it to the big screen; Mr. Bean & The League of Gentlmen spring to mind. Dr. Who has become a nice little cash cow for the BBC so it's not beyond credulity that a film might pop up.

Of course it goes without saying that the Daleks will probably turn up & feature :( I am not sure what I'd like to see though in a feature length story.

I would tend to be cynical about these kind of things and would take them with a pinch of salt.

Really, really wouldn't want this to happen though. I just think Who and TV are a match made in heaven. I just have a bad feeling about a movie. The theme would have to gargantuan and would take away from the tv series with Matt Smith. Give him his day. Also, you know they are going to bring back recurring characters like Rose, you know they will. That will have huge story implications for the current stories if they are planning a movie! Like if this gargantuan event in the movie takes place why was it never mentioned in the series!? Being pedantic here and perhaps it would be a case of, like in the audio series and novels, you take it for what it is.

I love Tennant, love is an understatement. And I adore his Doctor. But I feel that when he leaves he should draw a line under it and be done. Also if RTD has the Doctor so Messianic in the current series can you imagine what it would be like in a movie!?

Gardner hinted at a film at Comicon. Maybe there's truth in this.

Well if they do make it to the big screen the guys who did LOTR, Weta Workshop, are more then ready to do the set dressing like they did for Peter Jackson (himself also a big Who fan) Weta are already making official Doctor Who merchandise.
Richard Taylor talks about the Weta range
    The Weta Range

    This too shall pass.
