Hi all, i have multi room and got two shiney new cards in the post, however one of them is giving me BBC1 on channel 101 and scrolling through the EPG i am finding stations like ITV2/3/4. the second box is fine.

    this gives me 2 questions:

    1. is there any way to get RTE1 back on channel 101.
    2. is there any number i can call for help.

    any help appricated.

    Thats sometimes happens.

Why would you want to change it if you have sky plus-wouldnt you like to be able to sky plus itv one etc?

Also you should be able to tune in the irish channels on that card via other channels.

If you don't want the above-just ring sky and they will sort it for you.

sorry you wont be able to tune in the irish channels in 'other' channels as they are encrypted

New cards arrived this morning. All working properly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 194 ✭✭C Eng

What the idea in these new cards. I have multi room and not received my new cards yet. What if I dont fit them, will the old ones just keep working?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

The old ones will stop working at some point when sky decides to switch them off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 550 ✭✭✭tomslick

I got my two new ones today. Put first into SkyHD box and worked great. Took the old blue one and put it into my TM9100 and it'll keep working till Sept 4th. Leaving the other new card out until the blue dies.

Sky turned off my signal yesterday and when i rang them they told me that i should insert my new card, when i told her that i didnt get one she said she'dcheck the system and here was her response "Sorry we only posted the card today and there is nothing we can do to reactivate the old card" :mad:So i'dadvise anyone waiting for their cards to get on to sky ASAP. Anyone know who i Can contact to complain (comreg???)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

    Comreg do not regulate SKY.

    Try OFCOM.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,341 ✭✭✭✭Tony

I doubt if Ofcom will halp anyone outside UK and understandably so . Comreg did hint at sky control but this is the latest I've heard http://www.rte.ie/business//2003/0606/comreg.html

Got two new cards and they activated without any problems.

What's the purpose of the new cards? Does it bring any additional features/channels to Sky+ boxes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,062 ✭✭✭dlambirl

    AFAIK added security features

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

Apparently the old system got hacked a few months ago, hence the new cards to close off the breach.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,341 ✭✭✭✭Tony

    Where did you see/hear that?

Do you have some basis for saying this?
SKY replace their cardbase periodically to update security features (this is the second card reissue, last one was in 2002/3 I believe). It is normal, prudent security policy to update master keys and security procedures to guard against hacking attempts. All encryption keys have a limited lifetime, based on their length and the concept that computing power increases over time, so it's good practice to change them. Card technology itself needs to develop to resist direct attacks on it, so it's appropriate to replace it with newer silicon design.
Recent developments in card reader/CAM technology has meant that some receivers (including the Mvision Combo) have been able to use genuine subscription cards to decode encrypted SKY channels, but that doesn't mean that the encryption has been "hacked", it's just that the card has been used in a non-SKY receiver. The new white card also works in a non-SKY receiver, but I understand that they are now paired with a specific SKY box, so you can't swap them between genuine SKY receivers. I don't have a premium sub, so I can't verify if they work for the movie channels etc., but I'm sure someone will confirm.
So - nothing has been "hacked", it's just a normal security upgrade to keep the baddies at bay for another while:)

Well I do recall it being mentioned on digital spy. Even if it was breached Sky are hardly going to admit it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

Only one card arrived for my Sky HD box this morning, not for my multiroom. Swapped it over with no issues.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,711 ✭✭✭fat-tony

A major chip card replacement programme takes significant design and planning. You can be assured that this card issue has been 12 months and more in the planning pipeline and is not some knee-jerk reaction to a reported hack. You saw how long it took them to get the HD EPG through testing and into live operation;)

I got two cards - one for the multi-room sub I cancelled in January:rolleyes:
(so another reason to understand how long a leadtime there is in the mass reissue)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,341 ✭✭✭✭Tony

Being mentioned on digital spy is hardly conclusive. In any case the card changeover program has been in the planning stages for quite a bit longer that the hacking timescale you mentioned.

All entirely possible. Digital spy is hardly an authouity on such issues.

    Yes, in the right equipment!

My new cards arrived on Monday and I can see in the entitlements of the current blue cards that they are not due to expire until almost the end of August.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,711 ✭✭✭fat-tony

The white card seems to work ok in the Mvision Combo also:)
Can't verify if the premium channels work as I'm not subscribed to them anymore.

Thanks fat-tony, that's very interesting, hadn't done any testing myself but had heard a few people complain that it didn't work in T-Rex CAM's so assumed that all the older systems would be rendered useless!
