Baking soda - good for whitening?

Hi all, I'm getting braces off soon, and I really want to get my teeth whitened but of course it is quite expensive and I'd like to go for a cheaper option :) I've heard baking soda mixed with toothpaste is good - anyone confirm? Also, could I use it while I still have my braces on?

Wouldn't recommend doing it while the braces are still on...you could be left with marks from the brackets.

Best to wait till you get them off...
