Met Police officer with yellow checkers on their hat?

Was in London a couple of weeks ago and got chatting to a policeman in a cafe on Baker Street, turns out he was originally from Dalkey and he gave us all tips and advice of the do's and dont's in London and he also mapped out a route for us to get to our hostel using the tube,he threw in a few words of gaeilge as well!

In a typically Irish way,he was being called away on his radio and he just turned it off and continued chatting away to us,he was a very nice and friendly man.

He was wearing the standard Met uniform but his hat had yellow checkers on it instead of the usual white one's,just wondering if anybody here knew what that meant?

Met traffic wardens are a rare enough sight these days as most of their functions have been taken over by Transport for London.

I think parking tickets are all dealt with private companies contracted by the council too. Similar to in Dublin.

Yes, spot on. Where I worked, Westminster City Council employed wardens. Most of the Met wardens went into TfL, CPSO's or went into admin positions in traffic processing units at their borough.

This is where it went pearshaped as the council traffic wardens were not the brightest bulbs in the room and we dealt with a lot of "assault" allegations by both wardens & public on occasions.

Not all the boroughs use private companies. Some still use their own staff. Trojan911 is right in saying that a lot of them lack the basic intelligence to live.

And bear this in mind when you think that the PCSO route is a fast track into the Job to become a PC...

Just in case the wires are crossed here. I refer to the Westminster City Traffic Wardens as the problem ones.

The Met ones, I found were a lot better, but I hear what you are saying.

    Agree 100% there.

The met wardens are sound. The council ones are often thick as 2 short planks. Westminster wardens have been caught out loads of times for being involved in dodgy stuff.
