    hey guys,
im starting first year in nui galway in september and just wondering where is the best place to stay for first years? ive heard of places like gort na coiribe, amhra house and lisdonagh etc but are these not that suitable for first years or what? i tried going on to the corrib village website to see pics of the place (to see if its really a kip) but no luck...would i be better off staying in dunaras no??

Im not a student and havent been to some of the student villages, the one across from dunnes on the headford road is nice, but the thing about these places is that the do things like limit the broadband or cut it off , no party's etc (dunno if its true but i've heard horror stories), and when you are paying out good money on a place to stay i dont think they have a right to do that.
If i was you, i would find a few people that you might know or whatever and get a place of your own. Just a suggestion.

Listen COCO, just go to Corrib Village. Its not as bad as everyone makes out and is unreal for making friends etc and most importantly is close to college!

Gort is nice but you'll do well to get in at this stage!

personally i would pick either amhra house or dun na corribe if your set on getting official student acomadation as they're very close to the college and they both seem like nice tidy comfortable places that are close to town relative to the other official student houses.

Although be warned a lot of people have said on similar forums like this that the landlord of Amhra house is really really strict.

Corrib village has a rep for being an overpriced kip and the likes of lisdonough, dunaras and centerpoint while being cheaper are not very central.

yea all rooms in corrib, except for the twin sharing, are all over €4000, its such a rip-off...

Dunaras is WAY too far away, 25 min walk in morning on the cold, wet galway mornings arent pleasent. Its pretty pricey for the location too. My reccomendation would be to go for somewhere up newcastle road, greenfields maybe or clifden park, 10 maybe 15 mins and your in college and theyre all pretty nice houses that have reasonable rent. Corrib vilage seems to charge exhopbant prices for what your getting though i cant really talk about it cos i never lived there!

    I wouldn't listen to that wobbles-grogan fella, he's only a waster ;)

Corrib village is for the real 1st year experience, it's a fun and sometimes wild place to live. If that's what you are looking for, go for it!

Gort na Coiribe is nicer than Corrib, and has its fair share of parties too. A 10 minute walk from college, so all in all, it's a good place to live, was there for 2 years myself.

Dun Na Coiribe is, in one line, far away. You're talking 20 minutes to college, which isn't really fun.

Getting a house on your own is an option, but it's more hassle than using one of the above

hey, i know what you mean about a bit of a ripoff, im starting in september too and I can't find anywhere thats under 4000, so im on a househunt now...does anyone know if theres a list of just student houses around? I've tried the nuig website but it keeps telling me that theres an error on the page...fair annoying!

Gort and Dun are literally RIGHT BESIDE eachother, how on earth does that add 10 minutes to your walk over the bridge and make it a worse place to live live?? If anything, Dun is closer to College than Gort!!

I'd say he meant DUNARAS is too far away!

Gort na Coiribe is grand, I stayed there in second and third year. There are a good few first years staying there, you definitely wouldn't be the only one.

If you check the galway advertiser or daft.ie you'll find houses near the college that are privately owned and not run by the college. The landlords are usually picky about taking first years though! If you have a few friends to get a house with you'll be ok finding a place that way. But if you're looking on your own it could be hard to find a room in a private house with students.. at least for the first while anyway until people start fighting with each other and move out, usually around after christmas ;)

If you want to live with other first years, you should move into student accommodation, the likes of corrib village is great craic but definately not worth the price it is! Dunaras is a 25 minute walk to college but its flats are nicer and sure isnt it better for your health! :D Amhra house doesnt have many first years but its not bad accommodation.. and right in the centre of town!

Would they not say on the website no? They don't seem to say anything about being booked out but maybe that's normal?

'Spose I be ringing everyone now anyway...what's Atlantis like anyway does anyone know? Would I be way outta place as a 1st year?

You wouldn be outta place no. Good amount of first years would stay there. Only bit of advice i can give ya about lookin is dont go to Dunaras. Other than that they're all good :)

If ya wanna have the craic then Corrib Village may be good, if ya actually want to study every evenin and what not then go find a house somewhere.

Maybe you could find out if friends are goin to Galway to and find a house with them. Theres alot a houses up newcastle road!

    Good Luck!

Well my best friend was in Corrib, and she made some good friends and had a laugh, but if I'm honest when I visited I was kinda put off:p I don't mind the party party, just the accomm was sooo basic... of course I'll be begging for a bed there I can't find anything else!:pac:
My friend has an apartment above the shopping centre now this year, but 3 girls are already living there with her. I'm really hoping for student accomm cos I had a bad experience with older students on my own in a house last year! Suffice to say it didn't last long!:P

Menlo says 15mins walk, is this realistic or fanciful?! And Centrepoint, 25mins??? I've learnt not to trust such estimations:P

I'd say Menlo is near enough 15 minutes to college but i think you could add another ten minutes onto the time from Centerpoint!
