I only ever use a damp jay cloth and wipe in the direction of the fabric, not against the grain as I've found this causes broken threads etc.

I wouldn't recommend using anything harsh on it as it can be quite delicate, maybe mix some surf liquid in to clean it off? Have 2 cloths, one with cleaning fluid on it and the other just with warm water.

I wrecked a pair due to walking on a muddy lawn at a bbq, so had nothing to loose :P put them in my sink with some warm water and used fabric shampoo on them, worked a treat! Colour went slightly lighter, but otherwise were back being new looking.
