I was working in Dublin in the 80's. I worked in town a lot. We finished at 5.30 and getting the 39 bus to Blanchardstown to be home for 6.30 and the TDF. Of course in dem days Channel 4 was the only way to see that days stage 'live'. Other than that it was read about it the papers the following day. I used to buy the Irish Press. John Brennan used to cover it for them, he was good.

Then of course around the time of Kellys win in the Vuelta RTE used to show highlights each night. The thing that used to annoy me about their coverage was that they just showed the last 1/2 or 3/4 (I can't remember exactly) of the race. No showing how breaks formed, escapes happened or were brought back etc etc. Although CH4's coverage was only 30 mins, with a break, it made great watching.

    Thanks for the memory :)

    WARNING RANT ALERT

John Brennan abandoned cycling when it lost it's popularity

while i am bitching about 'know it all' Irish hacks - they said on that enlightening daytime show on Spin 103.8 yesterday that Cathal Dervan said soccer should not use advanced technology and should rely on referree. He would day that, it's in his interest (media's interest) to ensure there is as much hype to football to keep him in a job as an opinioned kno it all!

    RANT ENDS

Hey, I'm an electrician. It would be extremely uncool to be seen reading the Irish Times (which gave/gives better on going cycling coverage) on a building site :D Especially an apprentice as I was then :D I wouldn't be here today if I was caught :p
