Im strongly considering going to Dubai again this Xmas, unfortunately i have nothing booked and after extensive searching i cant come up with a flight below €750 which would be my absolute maximum limit to pay, what i am thinking is going on standby,do people still do this?i remember years ago people saying they got a flight "on standby" is it still done, and if so is it likely to be cheap?Dublin or any UK airport would be ok,id be willing to risk doing it if it meant i could get a good deal (return that is) any suggestions?

Search this forum for info. on standbys. If I remember correctly people said it was much harder these days with security...

To be honest, I think your chances of getting on a plane to Dubai, on standby, at Christmas, are very slim. Having said that I dont have any better ideas on how to get there for cheap.

I was thinking as much thats theres not much chance of me getting on a flight, searched again and the price has gone up even further, its over 2 grand  to travel from Dublin cheapest ive come up with from Heathrow is £637.50 STG roughly €908 and theres no way i could afford to pay that money so its not looking too good........

Unless you're airline staff going standby isn't an option, i posted a more detailed explanation here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=54880&highlight=standby

Unfortunately getting a cheap ticket isn't likely at this stage, Dubai is increasingly popular especially over winter these days and you've left it too late to get any good deals on 'advance-purchase' tickets.

Would suggest you try www.gulfairco.com www.etihadairways.com and www.qatarairways.com for less known middle east airlines with conx to Dubai and may have better late availability/prices.

If I were you (and I'm not) I'd have a look at Aer Lingus' 3-9eu sale closing v. soon.

Aer Lingus don't fly to Dubai and their specials are available on their own services only.

I'm guessing he means "get a cheap aer lingus flight to heathrow or somewhere like that where there might be cheaper connections to dubai"

Oh yeah going standby, if it's even possible anymore, is a very bad idea.

Very sweeping statement and not accurate at all... Concessions are vailable only in the circumstances I detailed in the link above (i.e. you work in the industry).

While I've heard countless disaster stories from colleagues about getting stranded various places I've never had it happen myself. Standby is a game for the well organised with Plans A,B,C and preferably D-Z. You need a lot of flexability (including last minute changes of destination! :D ).

Doing this over the years I've been lucky enough to see a lot of the world and often in First and Business class for a tiny fraction of what it might have cost me otherwise.
