EUROPEAN rugby union giant Munster has emerged as a frontline candidate to secure Broncos star Karmichael Hunt.
As revealed in The Weekend Australian last month, Hunt will pursue his blossoming career overseas next season, having turned his back on a $425,000 deal from the Broncos.
Hunt, who is out of contract at the end of the season, is weighing up two offers from Japanese rugby and has also attracted interest from Super League clubs.
However, it is believed Hunt is giving serious consideration to accepting a deal with Irish powerhouse Munster.
As well as providing a far stronger competition than Japan, Munster boasts the added lure of having Hunt's high school coach Tony McGahan at the helm.
Hunt yesterday reiterated his desire to wait until the end of the State of Origin series before announcing his decision.
    Interesting...
ex rugby league player, meant to be quite promising (a la Carney, but still!)

OT, saw this over on PR, couldn't resist!

I'm always wary of League players coming to play union but having been in Oz for a while and watching league for last 4 years I know this lad is a seriously good player!!!
As a Leinster fan I'd actually like to see this guy playing although Munster seem to have enough cover in the backs. He's usually FB in League but with Jones/Hurley/Warwick and Earls, how would he fit in?

    Greg Inglis to Leinster please.

Hunt has been a huge star with the mighty Broncos, still young 22or 23, has had a run in with the management at broncos over a incident at the end of last season, with the salary cap in league, broncos may struggle to match any huge offers to go to union, but a move to an australian union franchise is the most likely place for him to move to. There has been a few high profiles moves to union recently however.

The question though will be who has more money Munster or the clubs in Japan.

Regardless of how good he is, I think we have enough players if the deVilliers thing comes through. I'd rather Felix Jones be given a chance at fullback rather than taking an expensive chance on a NIQ League player.

I agree. What's the point of buying so many overseas players. Local talent can't be brewed because of this.

However, I have to say that big star names will probably attract more spectators and revenue.

I don't believe they would sign two NIQ backs, so i imagine if they have Hunt lined up, JDV won't be signed. I just don't see it happening. They've also been looking for a prop.

Why exactly would he be 'Carney II'? Not only is he in his early 20s and only starting his career, there have been plenty of league players who made it to union. As I understand it, he played union as a schoolboy anyway.

I'd imagine this is only going to happen if the De Villiers deal falls through. Don't we already have 6 NIQ players?

    Carney II ?
Carney was 32 when he switched and had basically played at the highest level he could have done.
Hunt is not a bad player and I would say would be used as a centre if he ever played rugby union, like Gasnier is now. However, agents throw out all sorts of guff whenever its contract-time for their clients and I feel that this story is one of them.

just saw an update on this, in what seems like a strange move, Hunt has signed up to go to Aussie Rules, seems like the first time some one has moved in that direction.

Think Canada's former scrum half with the long hair moved into Aussie Rules last year. Odd move. Mike Pyke think his name was.

Good for Irish Rugby could you imagine if Munster signed ANOTHER import???

For the best if you ask me for everyone involved.

He's probably never played for Australia and could have been eligible for us. Might have been amazing for Irish rugby. ;)

Yep, he is playing footie with the Sydney Swans, Tadhg Kennelly's old club. Pretty decent too.
But this will be the first league convert to AFL
