OK this may be off the wall but given the uncertainty about the Tour of Ireland is there any possibility of this forum getting involved in any way? This forum now has access to a huge number of cyclists from all backgrounds and all parts of the country. I never cease to be amazed at the quality of discussion and the range of ideas that emanate from here. We all want to see this great event not only taking place this year but going from strength to strength. So, my question is, what could we do to promote the tour? Could we help in any way with attracting sponsors, promoting the tour, etc etc. Before anyone writes me off completely – I seem to remember the Jordan F1 team carried a logo, which was sponsored by Irish supporters. Go on, let your imagination run wild on this and see what happens!

Well for start we could lobby local concils North and South to stop charging to support ALL sporting events.

Probably shouldn't say who i heard from. I'd consider it as reliable as possible though.

Was told that Failte Ireland bailed them out.

    There is:

    TOI - Pro bike race

Ras - Pro / Am Bike race

TOI Tour - Tour! not a race

because everyone referring to the amateur TOI refers to it as the
    "Tour of Ireland Tour" ?

Well, I think a list of names of people around the country who would be willing to do some class of volunteer work would be a good start. So if there's a Kilkenny volunteer needed, I'm here.

In cycling, 'Tour of Ireland' is a bike race registered with the UCI. It's been on and off the UCI calendar for years, sponsored by Raleigh/Dunlop and Nissan, among others. It's quite an expensive event as a 2.1 ranking means that the organiser must pay expenses for the teams, organise TV and media coverage and engage some very extensive safety measures. I think the cost is about 1 million euro. The payback for Bord Failte is in TV coverage on networks like Versus, ESPN, OLN, etc. It's about getting foreign tourists to come here.

The sportif ToI is not organised under UCI rules, has no TV coverage and is very much an amateur event. Its use of the Tour of Ireland name has caused confusion with police, local aiuthorities, town councils and hotels on more than one occasion. At one pint eh matter was heading towards the courts, but perhaps it's been settled in some other way.

I really cannot see anyone other than an experienced professional organiser with an experienced team being able to meet the high standards of a UCI 2.1 event and meet the expectations of sponsors. But it would be great if volunteers were given an opportuinity to participate.

The sportive is also having problems and was unprofitable this year, that is why the question was asked. I did it myself this year, it was a great event and I would be sorry to see it go by the wayside.

Just looking for clarification on which one the OP meant- for what it's worth I would be on for any support possible to get the sportive done again next year as I would certainly like to do it again.

Last year for the Stage start in Ballinrobe all our club members wre asked to give a hand. We manned all the diversions and road closures on the morning. Helped the road crew put all the barriers and the sponsor boards up and take them down. So if thres a stage in your area there is def a local coordinator out thre who will be delighted to accept any offer of help.

Re the sportive its offical name is 'Tour of Ireland Cycle Challenge' and is in the CI calender. It is worth saving as its the closest most will ever get to the real thing

Ditto, my club marshalled the last 10k into Waterford last year. I think that there is no shortage of volunteers.... If you could pull a few sponsors out of the hat that might be good though !
