Just take one of the phrases and run through Google and hey, ho.

Also anything requiring ID in combination with an advance cheque is a scam.

OP, I could tell you if it is a scam or not, but first I'll need your banks details, a utility bill and photo ID PMed to me!!!:D

Seriously, the dodgy grammar, spelling cheque as 'check', and the general bs storyline are all dead giveaways.

You should string him along for the craic.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

I got exactly the same email, but i'm in Dundee, I was slightly unsure, but the guy did phone me, but could hardly speak any english at all, I went ahead being the mug I am, and got a cheque for £2850, and put it in the bank. I started to worry and then googled the phone numbers, and realised its a scam (feeling bloody silly), I tried to stop the cheque clearing but couldn't so had to remove all my funds out the bank, and report it to the police. These people must be sick as they are now picking on the unemployed who are trying their best to look for work.

I'm not sure thats how the scam works - they don't take the money back out of your bank account directly (unless you've given them your acc number etc.)

the idea is, you lodge the cheque, they ask you to send them the balance that they overpaid and then they cancel the cheque (or the bank finds out the cheque is a dud).

if you have removed the cheque money from your account, then you're going to find yourself overdrawn when the scammers cancel the cheque

Thats what the scams is about, they hope you trust them and forward the amount on by wiring it by western union, unfortunely i never google this in time and had to remove my own funds out of my account, and tried to explain to bank, and by the way they aren't very helpful, and asked if I was money laundering, and also police weren't that helpful either, I will be investigated by the fraud squad when the cheque is known as being a fraud. As this cheque was from a rugby club, which I phoned last night. They are having to change all their account because of this, and he also told me, that I was one of many. I know I have been silly, but I'm new to job hunting. I was a bit doubtful to start with and googled a few things, but never thought to google the actual email.

At least I have found out before I did wire any cash!!!

Anything that sounds too good to be true, isn't true, I've learnt my lesson!!

    I actually feel physically sick...

He claimed to have posted the cheque last Monday but it hasn't got here, I think now it's because I didn't put the country in the address.

E-mails were passed back and forth. I assumed it was a clean gig as he didn't ask for bank details. Smart. I didn't know that you could lodge a cheque and have it cleared and then they take the money back!

Do you think they can do anything else if you don't lodge the cheque?

cheesesambo - This is a scam. Do not lodge the cheque or have anything else to do with this outfit.

    Thanks.

I know now that it's a scam. But what I'm wondering is if I ignore them, can they do anything else with my address or details?

Exactly what happened & what info did you give them?

Well he asked for my address and phone number. The cheque arrived. Postage is from London and it's a "Bank of Ireland" bank draft apparently from Carlow, it doesn't even look real.

Bring it to the Gardaí & tell them of your suspicions.
