    Hi all ,
I don’t hunt (unless you count paper targets) so said would ask you guys a mate of mine has a largish amount of land (40+ acres ) and is how should we say living the organic life .. so plenty of crops , chickens , ducks , odd turkey (or 20) , some geese , goats etc etc .

Now he has been plagued this year by fox's , gray crows , magpies decimating the residents young this year .

He hasn’t shot in a long while but used shoot shotgun , he was asking me about what rifle would be suitable for these vermin , so I said a .22 should do it, then remembered isn’t the .22 too small for a fox ? ..

So what would you guys think something thats cheapish to feed ( he is overrun with crows, magpies etc and a fair amount of foxes) he also wants to do a bit of target .

this would be his first application in Ireland .

    Thanks
    Darr

MODS : sorry had meant to put this in HUNTING can it be moved ?

.17 is a good all rounder, but for grey\mags you can't beat a .22, quite and deadly.
Plenty of lads could help with the fox problem with larger calibres. For the few foxes a year on his patch is it worth while.

Also you can do a lot of damage to greys and mags with larsen\octagan traps.

If he used a shotgun before, maybe go back to such with 00 buck or slugs for the foxes and a good light, and appropriate shot for the crows?

Had said that to him regarding the shotgun , but he wants a rifle.
Whats ammo cost for the .17 like also would a .22 mag be ok for fox .

While he's waiting, why not get a local gun member to come and do some vermin shooting? I'm sure most mambers would be happy to oblige.

    Hi Darr,

I have a .22 mag. Didn't use it on fox yet but a few people have told me its more than up to the job. Provided he has good shot placement and only shoots on the smaller side of 80-100yds. Great gun for rabbits.

    Hi guys ,
I will pass on the possibility of getting a few avid hunters in .. hahah then he will have the problem of an over run of hunters :) ( that might be worse then the foxes)

    So far .22 mag or .17 //

I will do a bit of research for him .

shot plenty of foxes with 22 mag out to 120 yrds but changed it lately to a 22 hormnet which I find is mustard of all types of vermin. Also plenty about with lads goin for those fan dangled 223's.:D
