Hi, I'm looking for a new bike but I'm really not sure what to get. I havent cycled properly since I was about 11/12 but would like to get back in to it as I've only lately realised how handy bikes are. It'd just be for going to and from college with maybe the odd bike trip with friends. Apparently a hybrid is the best bike for me but there are so many out there I really don't know what to get or where to get one. I'm also a girl so I'd like something pretty >_>

Sounds like a hybrid would be a perfect bet all right. What do you want to spend? Something like a Dawes Discovery 201 is a decent entry-level hybrid (avoid the suspension fork which is unnecessary, extra expense, slows the bike and a source of potential problems.)

Hang around here long enough and you'll realise that the boys here like pretty bikes too.

A hybrid should be perfect for commuting. A few people I know have a Giant FCR, which is quite light and nippy and seems to be quite reliable. See what other people recommend and then maybe start comparing prices.

Giant CRS 3.0 is also a decent hybrid at the cheap end. That and the Dawes are at the entry-level, you can get nicer (like the Specialized) but for more money. If you have an idea of budget we could suggest more. FCR is a good bike but on the racy side with thin tyres etc.

If it is commuting/utility use make sure to get something that will take rack and mudguards.

What sort of distance are you doing to college and what sort of distances and terrain do you think you want to get up to at the weekends?

My BH just got a Trek 7.5 FX WSD. She loves it, she reckons it's a very pretty (read girly looking) bike too. If it's a little out of your price range the 7.3 pictured above is a similar bike.

They all look like deadly bikes! I was in Decathalon today and their b-twin 7 is reduced to less than €300. It includes lights and mudguards and has pretty good suspension so I think I might go for it, it's not very pretty but I'm sure I can jazz it up!

Now I have a question about bikes being stolen, my parents have meade it pretty clear that getting my bike stolen in Dublin is pretty much inevitable, are there any areas I should completely avoid locking my bike?

Within the M50 .. just kidding. There's been alot of talk here abot stolen bikes from outside Train stations etc, near pubs on a weekend late night so they are places to avoid.
