Do many members of the ES visit schools these days, if so, for what programmes - road safety?

We had one visit from the Gardai in 3rd or 4th class in primary school, long before anti-stab vests and the like. Then anti-speeding messages and videos (from Australia, I think) in 6th year in secondary. I believe the fire brigade visits my mother's school the odd time, but that's it.

Coast Guard do Water Safety demo, they have an education trailer the local units bring to schools. Have a look at the story below of a recent one in Swords.

If requested the services will attend. Traffic have a good schools programme so call your local unit. The local drugs unit should be able to deliver a talk on drugs as would customs. Fire service do it as do the Irish Coast Guard. Depends on what you want really!!

Down my way the traffic corps have a just one life program, aimed at ty's. Basically a road safety sseminar and they close a section of road sometimes and drive down it fast and to a stop to show the stopping distance! With them in the car.

Aparently they are quite good aswell

I'd say that's popular! we had a talk before, the "just one life" one I think but no actual driving action:( It was still very good, and effective which is the main thing

We had a Garda or two give a drugs talk when I was in school a few years ago

Yeah, firefighters visit 3rd class in primary schools, teaching about fire alarms, escape plans for the home, not to be an arsonist and so on. Though this might be suffering as budgets get tighter, it's a big part of the community fire safety effort.

Indeed it is, here in our area, 22 out of 23 (one short ) were visited by 3 of colleagues and myself. Altogether, 720 kids received the School Fire safety visit talk. Each primary school in the country should be visited by their local fire station every school year. if you have children either going into in 3rd class, or have been in 3rd class and did not receive the visit/ talk, get on to your local co. council/authority fire services department and ask why not? They are all issued with these packs. Even ask the Station Officer in the station about it

so this should start again in september 09, and afaik, the Guardai also do visits here too.

Com-pol regularly gives visits to local schools, especially around Halloween when they show the 'Happy Helloween' video. They also do a programme with 5th class & anti-drugs talks to older classes.
