I spoke to Dan before the national championships took place, so no opportunity to ask that question. He was very disappointed though that he couldn't race them this year. The way the flights worked out meant he simply couldn't make it back to Girona before the team left for the Tour. He said that the amount of recognition the jersey got was unbelievable.

Read your interview yesterday, t'was a good read. Martin sounds very sure of his ability. Such a shame he can't use the tour as an opportunity to show it. Guess we will have to wait for the Vuelta.

I missed it, but presume this is it. Good read alright.

True. The overriding memory I have of the article is his picture. He is an amazingly ugly bloke.
    Sorry, had to be said.

Its not that, I just tought he looked plug. Simple as.
I expect people in the public eye to take care of their appearance. Now while I realise that not everyone is as well endowed in the looks dept. as your truly here, there is no excure for an elite athlete to just look so weedy and plain ugly. He needs new teeth to start with. I wish him the best of luck with his career, but I expect a certain standard of presentation.

He may be an ugly bloke, but he will look good in a yellow / polka dot jersey in the tour some day.

I said that to godihatethehills, I thought it was Roche and saw this big ugly mug. The polite way of saying that was "He certainly looks Irish anyway".

    Thats my point.
If the early career form and predictions are correct, then Martin is going to be photgraped a lot. On that basis he needs to enhance his image, if even to bring in endorsements that successful athletes can attract. For guys like him, this is a business as well as a sprot. His window of opportunity is short.:D

In all seriousness - it was a good read. I genuinely like to here young athletes back themselves, rather than mouth the old platitudes of "I'll try my best blah blah blah".

To succeed in anything you need confidence in your abilities and in the direction of where you want to go. This kid seems to have it. Best of luck to him.
Pity about the tour, but I hope to follow his emerging career.
Nice interview Tonto. More of that sort of thing.

He oozes self confidence alright. And I think that's quite a good thing. When you're his age, it would be easy to get overawed by the competition.

Sorry. Couldn't help it. Living in the US, the English/teeth stereotype is frequently brought up. My teammates have remarked upon DM's McGowan-esque fangs a couple of times. This thread reminded me of that. Personally I think Irish teeth can be just as bad as English teeth. And my own are no exception to that. I'd better keep my mouth shut.

I guess he can look whatever way he wants to. The kid is going to be a star.

That is such a second place remark. It is simply not compatible with winning.

I didn't know Roche was a rock boy, I thought he grew up in France. Learn something new every day.
