I've recently switched from Itunes to SongBird due to Itunes performing as a apple product should, adding a album I only wanted added once 5+ times etc and its been doing that for a while, SongBird doesnt duplicate files when copying over, it copys the files in the folder once only, something itunes for some reason doesnt understand, there is also a addon for SongBird called "The Exorcist" which lists duplicated songs, also ghost tracks and lets you remove them, sure there will be a few if you've been using itunes, I don't use libraries so play all my music off the ipod, and these all work fine, not sure about the answer to your first question, but certainly the others Song Bird should sort :)

    hhm

how is your ipod when playing in itunes after using songbird?

like if i go to a friends or want to use back on me pc etc - will it still play via itunes?
still able to add songs from itunes onto it?

does it export and import all names correctly - ratings - genres etc?

SongBird has a Itunes support plugin, basicly mounts you ipod like itunes would, seems to even support the smart playlists ive created, not a problem in itunes as I've checked all appears ok, do you buy music off itunes? If so I doubt it supports transfering of DRM music, works fine for me transfering mp3s though, it will recognise all ID tags on songs which you previously edited in itunes like ratings etc..

None that I've noticed, bar it takes a bit longer than itunes to mount the ipod, its a much better player though, I don't regret switching to it
