Hey there, I have my broadband connection through ntl modem and netgear router, My router has down tools and can only connect to net when wired through router and modem. But when I disconnect the ethernet from laptop i can still see other wireless networks around me but not my own settings. I did call tech support on ntl but they passed the buck to netgear and gave me a helpline no. When i called the no i was unable to speak to anyone because i dont have a landline (no mobile calls accepted).

I went and bought a new router (trendnet wireless g router). When following the installation disc it kept coming up with an error unable to install router. whats the prob?

Apologies if thread is in wrong catergory.

ok for starters try connect a different laptop to the router (wirelessly) and see if you can get a connection, if so then the problem more than likely lies in your settings on your laptop and not the router(maybe consider doing a system restore back to a date that you were wirelessly connected with no problems).
if you cant connect at all using both laptops then try do a reset of the router , there should be a pinhole on the back of the router , press it while the router is powered on ,

also update all virus/malware removal programs and run them all to rule out any nasties causing problems.

So with the original router, it would work fine when Wired but not Wirelessly, but you could see all the other wireless signals in the area... What I would there is plug in your laptop/PC wired to the router and configure it manually through the web interface on the router and not bother with installation CD at all.

Open up your web browser and enter in: http://192.168.1.1

What I would try doing is changing the SSID (the wireless signal's name) and see if your laptop then detects the new signal. Or try temporarily turning off the WEP (wireless password) in case the encryption level is a problem.

Failing that a hard-reset of the modem, by pressing the little pinhole button on the back of the router, could be an last resort .. unless the wireless part of the router is well and truly knackered.
