    +1.

Id say Ubuntu would be easier to use for the usb modem.

with Ubantu you would have to create an new OS called Ubantu first :D:P

if you do a search there are many tutorials on setting up 3g modems on linux systems including Ubuntu.

The USB interface subsystem (as it does on XP) exposes the USB Modem as a virtual serial device. It's then the same as setting up a Dialup modem, but with special AT commands.

On XP you will find the fancy Operator or Manufactuer GUI is infact a skin on ordinary NT DUN (Dial up Networking).

Mobile 3G Data is just fast dialup with some fancy parameters. So no matter what version of UNIX/Linux you have it's possible to get any USB modem working with a bit of script hacking.

The instructions for all the common Distributions and Modems can be found via Google. I'd personally not make assumption that the OP has mistyped. There COULD be an Ubantu distribution :)
Instructions for Debian will also likely work.

[Ed. P.S. Results 1 - 10 of about 39,100 for Ubantu, either a lot of people can't type or...

maybe lots of people can't spell :) ]
