Repeating 2nd year

I'll keep this short and sweet. Basically I started off second year only going in for about half the lectures. That quickly petered down to the point where I didn't go in for the last 2 months of yr 2.

Now after looking for work for a few months, I have realised that I quite literally can't get any. So I am looking at repeating yr 2. I'm just wondering how much this is going to cost me? I seem to remember reading that you have to pay significantly more for a repeat year, but I have not been able to find anything about that the WIT site. I don't want to ask my course head about it just at this moment in time, so I was hoping that some of you guys here might know what kind of money I'm looking at ? Feel free to PM me if you would prefer not to discuss it here.

anywhere between 2 to 3 thousand euro to repeat the year if memory serves me. depends on how many subjects you repeat. try ringing the admissions office and see what they say. you dont have to talk to your year head then

if registration fees have gone up im goin to guess the cost of repeats has gone up to. not sure of the exact cost but it is alot. you dont want to leave it to late either when applying to repeat either, just incase you cant

You have two options, well, three.

Firstly, and probably the least hassle would be to knuckle down and try pass the exams that you failed. It will take a lot of work, but if you do manage to pass, you can carry on into 3rd year as normal.

Your second option would be to register next year for exams only. This means you pay no fees, only the exam fees. You won't be registered to use any of the WIT services and this includes Moodle. You also aren't registered as a student so you aren't officially allowed attend any lectures due to insurance and liability issues. Some lecturers don't mind letting people sit in on their classes though although there's quite a few who wouldn't entertain you at all. As you can see, there's quite a few "barriers" to registering for exams only and I wouldn't recommend it if you have a lot of subjects to repeat and/or can't work on your own initiative.

Thirdly, you can just repeat your year. It cost €3000 to repeat last year but the lecturer I spoke to wasn't sure what the price would be this year. Registration fees have also gone up to €1200, so you're talking about an outlay at the very least of €4200. You'd have no problem getting a loan from a bank or credit union, but I can't imagine paying back a loan to be the most exciting thing to be doing while you're not working!

My advice to you would be to work your ass off for the next month and try and pass your repeats. If you fail 1 or 2 repeats, then you can probably get away with registering for exams only next year, but only you'd know if you have the initiative required to motivate yourself to do the work. If you have more subjects to repeat, then you're probably better off repeating the year in full (less the subjects you passed) and just chalk this year down as experience.

I'm in a very similar situation myself. I'm hoping I can scrape a pass in my repeats (of which I have a lot) but if I don't, I think I'd rather repeat the year in full and pay full whack. If I just go exams only, it would mean that I would have spent two years out of college (not going to college this year was the reason I find myself in this situation). Also, if motivation is a problem, then having a €4k loan at the age of 20 should provide ample motivation to attend and get my ass in gear so to speak!

Dont forget lads - if you pass a good chunk in August, you may be allowed continue into your next year and carry the failed subjects. It depends how many and the subjects though.

As for the cost of repeating a year - I dont think its that expensive, at least when I repeated 2nd year (mostly maths and physics, to much to carry) I dont recall it costing that much.

EDIT: From what I can gather, it cost me €1,028.40 to repeat back in 2007. So my receipt says. That allowed me to go into lectures anyway. It may depend on the course.
