3GS & iTunes not connecting

I got one of the new 3gs iPhones over the weekend.

Now I had a jailbroken iPhone previously attached to my itunes, I've deleted the old phone from the devices attached to the iTunes but still my new phone will not connect or sync to iTunes. I've tried removing and re-installing but the system keeps crashing half way thru removing the program.

    Any recommendations?

Have you the latest version of iTunes? 8.2??

    Yes, 8.2

When I connect the iPhone to PC, it won't pick up on iTunes but will recognise 'a new hardware' and looks for a disc to be installed!

It is crashing when you try reinstalling iTunes? You might need to reinstall the apple mobile device support as well.

Have a look here on the recommended procedure from apple.
    Remove iTunes

Remove both iTunes and the mobile device support. Don't reboot until both are uninstalled then reinstall the latest iTunes.
