    Hi,

I need to get a couple of piers built for some gates. 2ft square, solid, about 5 ft tall. Any idea how much I can expect to pay for the blockwork and rendering?

    Many thanks.

Good to know, thanks Dazzler. Only problem is I have no idea how many blocks will make up the 2 piers!

blocks on flat or hollow blocks?

Blocks on flat could be as follows....

5ft high would be say 1.5m, with every course at 0.225m therefore, say 6 courses (then capping). Add another two courses from top of foundation to the ground level.

    Total 8 courses, with 2 blocks on flat per course = 16 blocks per pier x 2 piers = 32 blocks x 60c = €19.20! Who's gonna turn up for that!

I think for this job nobody is going to base it on block laying quantity. But they might give an overall price all or part of the following:
excavation, concrete foundations, block piers, capping, rendering, ducting for electrical/auto gates, metal inserts for gate hanging.

Thanks Toyota, really appreciate the info, at least I know where I stand and will negotiate from there.

Another thing is that the existing piers (too short and hollowblock) will have to come down and be rebuilt. Can the new blocks go on the foundation of the old or will they have to dig down and re do the foundation?

    Thanks again!

i wudnt see any reason why you need to put in a new foundation.I think if you get your piers done for less than 200euro you will be doing great..:D
