How do I access content that was in WebCT?
WebCT is no longer accessible for students in WIT. We are in the process of moving content from WebCT to Moodle. Content should be visible in the associated module area in Moodle. This short video explains how to log into Moodle and access a module area. If you log into Moodle and cannot see the required content, please send an email to moodle@wit.ie indicating your student number and the name of the module that you wish to access.

How do I log into Moodle?
Please enter your username and password in the boxes provided on the right of the screen. Your Moodle username and password are the same as your novell login that you use to log on to computers in WIT.
All WIT staff and registered students can log into Moodle.

staff - Username = staff id, e.g. ahayes
    students - Username = student number (without the W), e.g. 20001984.

Password - same as your novell password, e.g. ABCEDK

What do I do if I have forgotten my password?
Please call to the computer services helpdesk (computerservices@wit.ie or 051 845524) in the IT building if you have forgotten your password. Passwords cannot be given out over the phone or by email for security reasons.

Please contact moodle@wit.ie if you have any questions or queries regarding Moodle.

I am a lecturer in WIT and I need to access results in WebCT?
Please send an email to moodle@wit.ie indicating your novell username and we will temporarily restore access to WebCT. Access can only be restored for WIT staff.

Moodle is at; https://vle.wit.ie/ (ignore the security warning)

Used this last year, not a bad system really. Not sure if many courses were still using WebCT - I think most IT courses switched over as testers.

wasn't the whole college told this last year?
or were the IT students the only ones.

Anyways moodle is defo coming in. There is now a dedicated moodle team in the college working on it. It's a great system it's very clear.

WebCT will be phased out as the college has decided not to renew its license of the software.

Not sure if it was officially announced about the move, I think we (IT Students) were just told it was and we were the tester. But its official now, as I quoted above, so when everyone returns in September they wont be able to use webCT (anything is better then that).

Yeah we were made the guinea pigs lol...

Still i've never had a problem with moodle apart from the time it went down at christmas when i needed notes but that was because they didn't have a dedicated team at the time, which they do now that was assembled around april.

They have Computer Services who are unable (it seems) to fix the Cisco Server to allow for wireless. 3 days and counting. WIT and a Team? Seriously, the TSSG have you brainwashed!

Dave is a team in himself. (I cant remember the reason he said it was down, but moodle has been down a few times IIRC)

We used Moodle for most of last year in Marketing. Although some of the lecturers didn't use it but they were the technophobes who didn't even use the PC's in the rooms.

Moodle is free and open source I think. The cut backs coming down the line probabaly had something to do with the decision to change.

Heard on the grapevine the WIT got riddled by An Bord Snip Nua. Cost savings the order of the day from now on

they do have a team, i've talked to at least two of them, excluding dave :) i'm actually not brainwashed, the lad who made moodle for the college that dave helped used to work in my office, he has since got a full time job in the college administrating moodle.

Unlikely to be a problem with the script itself tbh. Suggests more of a server issue.

I believe their were always plans to get more involved in Moodle, so I have no doubt it has now happened. However, I (kinda jokingly) pointed out how a team of IT people cant fix the Cisco Server how will a team benefit Moodle (doesnt require an answer).

    It is the topic... :S

EDIT: Why does it actually need a "team" to manage something already built from scratch and just "plugs in"? Good to see the college using more open source software though.

Certainly from a support capacity, a team would be needed. Students and Lecturers alike are bound to have trouble with the new software and having a group of people specialising in Moodle will help reduce the time required to solve problems. Sully, while I haven't explored Moodle, I doubt it just "plugs in". Getting it to behave well with all the other shared computer services would be my idea of hell!

I would have assumed that would be covered by Computer Services and not a new team. When I meant "plug in" I was excluding the server side of things which I assumed were covered by CS. I always thought they handled webCT problems? So thats why I wondered why a new team was given it, rather then the old one?

I presume for the reason that if the database goes down they'll have people to roll it back asap. I presume that they are developing it further and further the whole time. It's not just going to be a standard template with plug ins. Maybe they are developing a way to tie in proper email into it too instead of those annoying little message boxes.

Well you see this time moodle is open source unlike webct so without the licencing fees for that there would be the option of hiring a team, it's only two people, 3 at max, and yes computer services are inputting too but they have their own work to do also, the wireless needs to be fixed :P

That's a completely different system tied in with your WIT Account.. I cant see them completely advancing Moodle to allow for that (assuming you are refering to the Novel software). As for creating new features, sounds interesting. Wonder what they could add extra.

As for a team of 3 to manage/integrate into the server - I guess less work for the guys in Computer Services so they can fix my wireless (and advance that).

It is a different system, the novell accounts, but the college mail is now on gmail too remember. That isn't tied to novell is it? It may be i'm not sure. I think if they could centralise the whole thing it woudl be a great idea.

They are paying for the Google System, so I dont think they plan on integrating mail into Moodle. Lot of work anyway. No connection with Novel, bar the user/passs
