nipple chaffing

New to running, Been running for 2 months, Ive gone from 17 stone 7 pounds to 15 stone 7 pounds. Did my weigh in yesterday. Currently running 5.7 k 4 nights a week give or take.

Anyway suddenly my shirts are ripping my nipples open. This first happened when i wore my kildare jersey running on sunday. Plasters are not an option(im a hairy man) and i tried vaseline last night but it wore off by the end. I was just wearing a regular cotton t-shirt. We are talking serious pain here. I had to walk the last km.

Ive googled this but plasters and vaseline are whats popping up.

    any suggestions?

Im not running tonight as a result of this.

Shave around the nipple area and cut a plaster down to size to cover them
That's what I would do if it was creating that much pain

You could try tying a tight bandage around your chest. That should stop chaffing.

Get yourself a moisture wicking t-shirt. Won't chafe as much as the cotton. What you need is some bodyglide aswell. Can get it in most running shops and in some sports stores and chemists. It lasts longer than vaseline.

Dont fancy shaving round the nipples, sounds like a slppery slope to me:)

The bandage is a good idea. I can see my local elverys from where im sitting. ill pop over and see if they have bodyglide.

Thanks very much for the suggestions.

Firstly, well done on the weight loss and keep it up!! +1 on a proper running shirt it will rub much less than cotton. Another option is johnsons baby oil gel - most boots stores do it - its thicker than ordinary baby oil and lasts for ages. Another option would be to wear a compression type top - under armour or canterbury - they are skin tight and will not move.... but honestly the best is shave plus duct tape works a charm!!!

    hey

im new to this section, just stumbled across it by chance. i had the same issue last week doing my final buildup training for a half marathon this friday. glad i came across this thread, coming up to 11 miles or so it was very sore lol

well done on the weight loss aswell, have came down to a similar weight myself from 22stone, have plateaued recently so im hoping the half marathon and continued running is going to help

Maybe try with a Dublin shirt instead?

Vaseline has always worked for me, although I don't think it would actually be much of a problem for me now with wearing wicking running tops all the time and also the HRM strap. I'd still lube up with vaseline though if doing anything from a half marathon up, but that is more down to better safe than sorry and becomes part of the pre-race protocol.

firstly, well done on the the weight loss mate.

Secondly, I suffer big time with nipple chaffing and I've tried everything and what seems to work for me is micropore medical tape that can be bought in any chemist. Its something similiar to the tape decorators use for painting but its more breathable. Also i have a hairy chest and I prefer to pull off a little tape rather than the stinging sensation while in the shower from nipple chaffing.

+1 on the Bodyglide. It's the best everyday solution imo. The de-luxe answer is Nipguards. I used them for the marathon last year, and they were perfect as Bodyglide probably wouldn't last that long. irishfit.ie (in Dun Laoghaire) sell both of these.

+1, I learnt the hard way on Sunday that 13.1 miles in a sports bra that's a little too big is not something that ends well.

Just revisiting this thread to say what worked for me.

Vasaline was pretty useless although it may work under a tighter top that gives less friction.

Plasters were ok but sore to pull off. tried them twice. the first time i had them in my pocket for when pain started. I learned the dont stick too well to a sweaty chest.

I got a running top that wicks away sweat and is fairly tight. Also got some bodyglide.top was 12 euro and so was the body glide.I was out last night and sunday and monday.6ish km each time.No pain at all! Thanks for the tips.

you might try nipguards if it comes back again, i.e. for long distance and rain. I used them a few years ago after reading a thread here and they worked a treat.

I have today discovered that my merino wool top, whilst usually nice and warm on cold days, is not the best thing to wear on a wet days running.

Ive gone back to plasters, boots plastic kind of ones if you are looking for tips. material ones are terrible. and i always bring spares in case they fall off. Body glide only seems good with tight tops.
