AAT recognised in Ireland?

    Hi

I'm currently based in the UK, and trying to decide which accountancy qualification I should go for (CIMA Certificate vs. AAT).

AAT seems to have some advantages in that, once qualified, I'd have the option to set up as self-employed straight away and offer basic accountancy services. I plan to go on and do the full CIMA course either way, and AAT exempts you from the Cert. CIMA level.

As far as I can tell though, AAT isn't recognised in Ireland, and I plan to move back at some point. Is this the case?

    Cheers!

    Recognised by whom?

I qualified first with the AAT back in 1996 and registered as an Agent with the Revenue, but I didn't need to have the AAT qualification to do that - Anybody can become registered as an agent and get a TAIN number.

In the UK the AAT has Reporting Accountant status, but I don't think any Technician qualification has such status here.

And while self employed UK AATs are regulated by the AAT, and require insurance etc. Non UK AATs are exempt from such, but the AAT do allow their non-UK members to be self employed.

BTW, if you qualify as a CIMA you wont have much more, if any, ability to be self employed. CIMA is a highly regarded qualification (hard to achieve), but intended for industry.
