Think i'm in the wrong place. Sorry if i am

Put it simply My mate has a set up.

TV - ONE HDMI running to two places - PS3
    - DVD
We switch if we want to watch on either or play music etc.

How ever the surround sound goes into the DVD player. Meaning it can't be plugged into the PS3.

There is an optical port on the PS3. DVD and TV.

What i'm asking is if we wanted to listen to say UFC 100 in Surround sound. It's a Optical Cable from DVD to his TV ? and if we wanted to play PS3 in surround sound its Optical Cable from DVD to ps3 ?
Cheers and sorry if its in wrong place

if the tv has an optical output socket, then put the optical cable from DVD - TV. this means that anything plugged into the TV will have its sound sent down to the DVD system.
