go with the samsung nc10. You will not be disappointed.

they retail for 380 in powercity but if you buy online they are cheaper.

EEE Linux asus - That's what you need. My brother and two of my friends have one in oz and nz and they're robust...cheap and are perfect for surfing the net or writing docs...512mb ram and 4gb solid state hdd...if you want you can buy a 16gb sd card on ebay for 40 euro to increase your capacity.
If you are going travelling...you'll appreciate the extra few quid this will save you as you can pick second hand one's up for under a 100.

You'd get 6 hours out it with normal web browsing with the stock battery.

Lenovo S10e for the win! LOVE IT!
    711111111.jpg
Picked up one from eBuyer a while back when they were on offer, stuck in 320gb HDD and 2GB ram, XP and OSX dualboot, sweet! Friend was at me to get MSI/Advert Wind clone but stuck with the Lenovo. Still having said all that Samsung NC10 is nice but I can't exactly see what makes it so much better than all the other netbooks out there bar a nicer keyboard from what I can see, and also the increase in its price to reflect this.

I got a n110 and i find it great (well technically i got it for the girlfriend, but obviously i use it the odd time too :D). Battery life is excellent, keyboard is excellent. All round i'm well impressed with it. I have no other experience with other netbooks however, so i may be biased to what i am used to.

Nc10. Maybe the nc20 if you want a bigger screen but the nc10 is just beautiful and a perfect size really. The screen is big enough for browsing and small enough to easily transport. It has taken many bangs as well and still going strong. I dropped it about 6 feet in a lecture once as well as smacking it off the poles on the bus (when it was in my bag) and the only sign that you can tell is the plastic slightly chipped where the power button is.

Battery is amazing too and it's so light. They keyboard is simply fantastic as well. The only downside is the touchpad is a bit on the small side and takes about a day or two of use to get comfortable with but once you do you wont even notice.

Ebuyer have the Acer Aspire One for €186 including delivery. http://www.ebuyer.com/product/146879
Battery life is pretty bad but you can get a 9 cell battery on Ebay for €40.http://cgi.ebay.ie/Blue-7200mAh-Battery-ACER-Aspire-One-AOA110-AOA150-ZG5_W0QQitemZ280328499112QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_LaptopsAccessories_LaptopBatteries?hash=item4144e16fa8&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12|66%3A2|39%3A1|72%3A1300|240%3A1318|301%3A0|293%3A1|294%3A50
O.S. is Linpus Lite but you could install Ubuntu or Windows 7.
Only downside is screensize, 8.9in compared to 10in on the NC10.

I put a link to that on the Bargain Alerts forum, If I hadnt bought my Lenovo I'd be pouncing on that right now. Have handled the Aspire in PC World and found it nice and light, screen size wasn't a major issue either, for the price is very hard to beat!

I bought the asus 1000he instead of the nc10 - better battery life was the primary reason.

Just yesterday bought the Dell Mini 10v. It has a nice graphics card that should be well capable of playing HD mkvs and a pretty nice spec for a netbook.

I bought the Ubuntu version which also saved me from buying another XP licence. I think I'll stick with Ubuntu but sure I can install XP from a USB stick if needs be.

I upgraded to the 160GB HDD and 6-cell battery so it costs €384 (inc VAT and Shipping)

There is another version, the Dell Mini 10, that has an upgradable screen. But it also has a much weaker graphics card and you have to buy Windows with it and it's base price is €100 dearer than the 10v. I don't understand Dells reasoning with this.

Think I'm going to go with the NC10. Seems to have gotten good reviews everywhere. Where would you recommend buying from? Laptops Direct seem to have the best price I can see at €349. Are these good to deal with? ANy other suggestions?

I just want to reiterate a strong recommendation for the nc10, I've been so happy with it.

I got mine from www.elara.ie for about 350. They were really good to deal with and it was delivered in about two days.

There's really little in the difference between the Mini 10v and NC10, OP go with which ever one you can find cheapest

Also, the NC10 has 10% off at pixmania.ie

    http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/r/nc10

I probably would of got the NC10 myself but I was able to buy mini 10v without any VAT through work, plus its for the OH and she wanted a green one :P

Might be worth a look. 240 euro delivered. Doesn't have Powerpoint but has XP installed as standard.
I doubt you will find a netbook with Microsoft Office pre-installed to be honest, only Open Office will be freely available and if you strictly have to use MS office you'll have to buy it seperately.

I always thought the Asus 1000H only has an 80GB hard disk. I stand corrected though

Yeah the build quality of the samsung is very good.
It also has 10 gb of the hard drive reserved for backup. This means if anything goes wrong, you can just hit a button and restore the laptop to how it was when you first bought it. Also you can make your own backup and restore it to a point in time when (for example) you had everything installed, and had a load of your mp3s and documents stored just where you want them. It's a very handy feature to get included, don't know if you can get that for free and it might be a little bit of work to find a program like that and install it if you're not that into it.

Also it has a button to just turn off the screen if you need. This sounds pointless but if you're just listening to mp3s you don't need to waste battery on the screen. As well if you're downloading a film or something you can just switch off the screen and leave it.

I've seen other posters on here mention that they've banged it around a good bit and never had any problems either.

I have just bought the NC10 in Argos for €369. You can look at it online, as it isn't in old catalogue. I've always gone Dell and was considering the Mini 10v until I saw that there is no VGA port which is essential to me, particularly for presentations or just to hook up to a larger monitor.
Also after researching online, NC10 seems to be by far best battery life. Haven't had much time 2 play with it, but I'm impressed so far. One thing I've noticed is that the mouse pad a little tricky, may have to get a seperate one
