Going travelling, but.... I have braces

    Hi there

    long and short of it is that I want to go traveling with some friends for about 8 months, but I have braces on my teeth.

    I'm just worried about losing all the progress i've made if i go untreated for this length of time, or getting fleeced if i go to an ortho abroad.

    could i get the wires off, leave the brackets on and get a retainer so that the treatment could resume once i come home?

    does anyone know what my options are? has anyone on here done this?

    any advice greatly received!

    usually, your orthodontist can transfer your records to your new orthodontist.
    what you said will also work.
    you could also fly home every 8-12 weeks if it is not too far away.
    if treatment is near the end a tooth positioner may be used to complete treatment instead braces. http://www.orthounlimited.com/ourproducts/tppositioners.htm
    (I am not related to this group, just googled and this came up)
    you could also just have your braces removed all together and retainers fitted, and then put them back on again in 8 months. your orthodontist will probably charge you extra for this.
    you should talk you your orthodontist for more information.
