Warning o2 are now charging for over use

Just to let everyone know that o2 have adopted a zero tolerance policy to those that go over the cap. I went 1 GB over and they charged me €30 extra. After arguing the toss I got them down to €15.

All my own fault before anyone says anything. Just wondering have they targeted anyone else?

There was a few stories of people being charged even last year, but i think it was just a case of being unlucky. At the time of those stories i was regularly using 30gb per month, but now i just use up to the 10gb.

Is it possible to view the amount used for previous months?

You can view your previous bills online so I would think that useage can be compared.
From what I was told the fair useage policy is now gone and that every mb over will be charged.

    Nice of them to tell people of this change to the T&Cs. Are you on O2 Clear, or the older plan? According to O2;
    O2 wrote:
    Q. If I go over my usage limit?

If you are on any of our O2 Broadband Clear plans you will pay 2c overage for each MB of usage over the price plan usage limit. If you are on our older plans i.e. ‘Broadband on the Move’ or ‘Broadband out and about’ and go over your usage limit then O2 can implement the Fair Usage Policy. Please see below
    Q. Fair Usage policy?

The Fair Usage policy which applies to the O2 'Broadband on the Move' and 'Broadband out and about' plans is designed to ensure customers have a good broadband experience. The policy enables O2 to manage excessive use by individual customers as this can impact the general speed and reliability of the Broadband service. The fair usage threshold/limit for O2 Broadband customers is 10GB per month. If you exceed this threshold/limit then O2 reserve the right to introduce an excess usage charge of 2c per MB. We will notify you in advance as to when the excess usage charge will be applied. When the 2c excess charge is placed on your price plan, you will be charged this excess every month thereafter when you exceed the 10GB threshold. If you then continue to exceed the fair usage threshold then O2 reserve the right to modify, suspend or terminate your service.

You shouldn't be charged if you're not on O2 Clear, without prior warning.

They claimed to have sent me this mythical text back in February. I certainly did not receive it.

I sees what has happened. They moved me to this o2 clear package. They did not advise of the termination of the FUP. Barstewards.

I was paying €30 and when the contract was up I asked if they would move me to the €20 package or else I would cancel. Looks like the screwed me over.

Registered letter sent. They can either change me back or they have a months notice of cancelling.

Just got my bill, used 11.40gb and no charge, but i'm on Broadband on the move, might try and use 15gb this month, see what happens, then 20gb next month etc.

    Anyways.

I won my case with o2. They waived all charges and put me back on the correct tarriff.

    Sucess for the little man.

Apparently after 3 over use periods they will suspend your service and only reinstate you if you agree to being charged 2 cent for each mb over the 10gb.

    I would be careful.

feck them, i used to go over by huge amounts every month. It would be nice to be able to watch streaming videos when ever i want without worrying about going over the 10gb, but if they do say i'm going to be charged, i can survive on 10gb anyway.
    Nothing to lose;)

Just goes to show you need to watch your online usage like a hawk. I'm not surprised tbh. I was thinking of changing my phone and noticed they're not giving out loads of credit any more. A fiver seems to be all they're giving. Money must be getting tight(er)

Zero Tolerence is how it should be though no? If you go over the limit for drink driving do you complain that last time you were let off so you shouldn't be guilty? Thought not.

What does drink driving have to do with internet usage? 10 gigs is sweet **** all, hate when people make stupid comparisons.

    I use 10gb every 2 days.

I think throttling is preferable. But the mobile ops will charge as the Data packages are massively subsidized by voice.

O2 are claiming that they are suspending over users on legacy tariffs and forcing people to other tariffs. I personally do not believe them. There are many users on legacy tariffs downloading in excess of double the cap and o2 are taking no action.

This is the whole truth! o2 Broadband!

Every 1gb you go over your usage u looking at a €12 euro over charge.

To put simple if you go over 10gb you are looking at €120. (in my oppinion this is a joke, as if you think about, it is the same price as 6 months broadband - 60 gbs )

So my story is in the first month i went over a good bit, u know couple downloads to many, and I was up to €400 euros.

No warnings call or text, i.e saying ever 1gb you go over , you will be charged €12. That all it would have taken for you to be very weary of your over usage.

Also, there was no freezing of account i.e. if you go over a sorting amount, o2 just allowed you to be continue to be charged. Until they do freeze your account, but at this time it is way to late. They do not call to say they are freezing your account and why? They just freeze and if you do not pay, the next bill you not only have your overage usage charge, but they will also give you an automatic cancellaction (charge of over €300)

Yes this story is partial my fault - As i made a big mistake of not asking what were the over usage charges. in my mind if you are paying €20 for 10gb. that every 1gb over could be much more than €2, plus maybe additional service cause.

After calling customer care, i was twice given other numbers which were out of service. than the 3rd call, pleaded my case, all they kept bringing up is you did sign a contract. they are right, they have got you.

Moral of story is dont let them get you, as all I know I am still an o2 broadbrand customer, not because i want to, just because it is better to keep a the worse service i ever had than pay their cancellation pay.

    A pi$$ed

    Customer

3 is €50 on Contract and €490 PAYG for excess per Gigabyte.

The fact is that 3G Mobile data basic package is probably at a loss. It's charged 150 to 500 times less per Mbyte than typical Voice packages (depending on Contract, operator & etc).

If there isn't regulation of this it will kill Broadband.

    O2 charge 2 cent per mb over allowance=1024mb x 0.02=€20.48 per gig

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,445 ✭✭✭✭watty

Only Memory is generally 1024 x 1024 x 1024 etc. (because addressing wires are powers of 2, Binary, not Decimal)

Disk storage and Counting of traffic counts properly in 1000s. (usually, but not always)

Unless I'm talking about memory chips, in my posts 1Gbyte = 1000Mbyte = 1000,000,000 bytes.

    :)

    The 3pay mobile 1GB add-on is measured as 1024MB.

It was on my 'check my balance page' Watty, don't know about other package measurements. Just checked, it only shows a decreasing total now.

Edit; It's at the bottom of the 'check my balance' page, tried to do a re-sized screenshot but I can't get it to work.

Alt Prnt-Scrn captures selected window only, or else Prnt-Scrn for entire screen, then paste into an image editor (gimp is a free download, better than MS-Paint, though I use Paint Shop Pro).

Thanks. However excess charges are per Mbyte.

    See http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8174839.stm
"Dongle users are most at risk of incurring charges from exceeding download allowances as limits on dongles tend to be much lower than fixed-line packages," said James Parker, manager of mobiles and broadband at Moneysupermarket.

Charges can be as high as €500 a GigaByte!

"We text them when they are at 50% of the usage, and again at 90% and again if they go over. We keep them well-informed and people understand our pricing structure," he added.

    Roffle! :D

    More Ohteu propaganda.
