Reeating Year

Yeah so basically I failed two subjects in English in second year. So I'm going to have to repeat the year by the looks of it.

I have a few questions someone may be able to answer.

1 - What is the cost of repeating the year? i.e fees

2 - It says in the regulations for Arts that I need only repeat the subjects that I have failed, so that would be 2 subjects. Is this correct?

    Cheers in advance.

Full fee's I'm afraid BUT only for the modules you are repeating. So I would estimate somewhere between 2000/2500euro?

An advantage for you would be that as you would only be doing two subjects you would have a lot of spare time on your hands so you could hold down a part time job easily enough if you wanted.

Well I had to repeat second year (not arts though) and I did it externally for 1400. But seein as they're raping us with the 1700 registration fee this year the external repeat fee is probably gonna go up too. Only had one subject to do so was able to get a full time job. It's pretty pricey considering your just paying for a sheet of paper at the end of the year but at least the option is there so you won't have to pay full fees and do it internally.

Hey I repeated a year and would reccommend you go to the Dean of Arts first. they usually will tell you if you can repeat internally or externally. push for externally cos its €1600.

    If its:

Internally- you have to pay for the lectures and tutorials and costs a significamnt amount it is the full course fee which can be gotten form the fees office.

Externally- "you are ment to do it on your own- basically not entitling you to attend lectures, submit assisngments or attend tutorials" but this is so not true. apporach the lecturers the day your first lecture begins and they are usually very helpful.

    Grants
    - If you had a grant last year you will not get a grant this year as you are repeating. You must approach the Grant office that issues yours for advice regarding it, sometimes in very small cases they may allocate it to you, but dont hold your breath.

My advice is call the Deans office or head of that specific subject and arrange a meeting, that will show them your willing to put in the work and they will fill in any blanks regarding the internal or external repeat.

    Hope that helps.

Big difference between doing it internally or externally. If you submitted assignments and essays last year, then you might be good to do it externally.

In which case you will be able to get a part time job - and if no such job comes up (quite likely these days) then you are also eligible for Jobseekers Allowance (dole) - you'd just need to get a letter from college saying you're an external student and therefor do not attend lectures, making you available for full-time work.

Also if you failed due to sickness, you may not have to pay repeat fees. You can submit medical documentation and they'll review it.

Are you sure about this?? I am repeating externally this year and was refused the dole because they said if i am registered as a student I cannot receive the dole even if it is external and i am available to work.

Yeah I'm sure - I did it. You might get a sticky person so just try again with someone else. Keep making it clear that you do not attend lectures and are therefor "available for full time work". If you're available for work and looking for work there's no reason you shouldn't get it.

I'm repeating the year aswell externally. I was just wondering is it possible to get a student card when repeating externally. I could do with access to the college library and books (also getting discounts in town!)

Yeah you'll get a student card as you'll need to register as a student, even if it is an external one. You'll need it for your exams anyway.
