I rang the Rotunda yesterday to book my first scan and was told 15th of October is the earliest available ???? I'll be 22 weeks by then (all gonig well of course) I thought the first scan should take place at 12 weeks???

Everyone I know who has kids had a scan at 12 weeks and got their little picture to take home etc.. I'm feeling a bit dissapointed right now..

Has anyone else had problems like this? I'm going to try the Comb and Holles Street today but I had hoped to go to the Rotunda as it's closest to home and easiest to get to in an emergency.. :(

Is there a baby boom happening right now or something???

    It is normal:)
Normally the pictures are from the around 20 week scan.

YES!! I couldn't get a first appointment until 23 weeks. When I got to the clinic I could see why...like a cattle farm it was!

I got my scan at 21 weeks and all was ok so that is the norm. I have heard of people getting scans at 12 weeks but it wasn't offered to me. To put your mind at rest though you should ideally have the scan at 18 to 22 weeks.

    Cheers guys..

I called Holles Street this morning and the lady I spoke to assured me that this is infact the norm..

I've booked with them for 12th of October... Roll on October :)

I went semi-private in the Rotunda, booked first appointment when I was about 7 weeks and got a first appointment date for week 15.
At the first appointment I was seen by a doctor, had blood tests, history check and also the doctor did a quick scan just to check heart beat and how many babies etc.!

After that appointment I then booked the 20 week scan which is where they check everything is progressing normally with the baby.

I know some people who go pblic in the Rotunda get scans privately around 12 weeks. If you speak to your own GP I'm sure they can advise on how to do that. There are private ultrasound clinics or you could be referred to one of the consultants in the Rotunda to get it done. You will have to pay for this however.

It's a bit confusing when it's your first baby, all the best

    Hi BOB...:D
The 12 week scan is usually offered if you go private... so that's why you've prob heard it from other people... the whole public v private thing is quite contentious had has been discussed here and elsewhere lots before (if you do a quick search I'm sure a few threads will come up.)
I'm going private in the Rotunda and so far love it and have no complaints, but yes it is MAD money, but we're paying it for peace of mind on our first pregnancy and if we get pregnant again may feel differently then, having gone through it all once before. People can give their opinions all they like, but doing what's right for you and having experienced something for yourself is how you can make a fully informed choice. I know a good few people who went public recently and had no problems or complaints, and I don't doubt that the care you get going public is just the same (the exception being fewer appointments and possibly a different person each time), it just wouldn't have satisfied my own personal worries (my mam had a difficult history and I wasn't sure if 'd be the same etc).
Feel free to PM me if you have any particular Qs re how its been for us so far.:)
PS You are not guaranteed a private room if you pay for private cover, its done on a first come first served basis, but as I said that is not why we're paying.

Was typing when Expectant posted there and she is right... that's a good tip,
you can get a private scan at 12 weeks and pay separately for that even if you are going public.

Yep, I was only offered a scan at 20 weeks in the Rotunda, so rang the Coombe and they could give me an appointment at twelve weeks and twenty weeks but advised be that because of where I lived if I needed an ambulance to take me to hospital they couldn't send one (lived in Santry at the time). So I went with the Rotunda and booked a private scan for week 12 in the RCSI unit of the Rotunda at a cost of €100. It was fantastic, much better equipment than the actually scanning unit in the main hospital!!

It's the norm these days unfortunately... :(

We are going Public in the Rotunda and were refered to the first scan by the GP after 12 weeks. Called Rotunda, booked. All timely.
We are on our 33 week approx now.
I suspect such a delay may be due to the cuts rather than a baby boom.

Hiya, when i had my first baby (9 years ago) they use to give you a routine scan at around 12 or 13 weeks. but things have changed now for some unknown reason! i rang holles street a couple of months ago to make my first app and to get a date for my first scan which is in august and will also make me near 21 weeks! i just couldnt wait that long to find out if all was ok and i expressed my concerns with my gp! he gave my the name and number of a medical centre in smithfield!

so i made an appointment to get a scan and they seen me last week at 12 weeks and it was the best money i ever spent! it was 125 euro but well worth it to see that everything was ok! :D

I booked a private scan, having it around 10 weeks though.

When it's your first, I think you really need to see something at the 3 month milestone.

I wonder is it just the busier Dublin hospitals that have such long waiting lists?
I'm in Kilkenny, seen the Doctor last week and she's booking me in for approx. 4 weeks time.

When I went to see her I wasn't sure if I was 5/8 weeks gone, so I went for a private scan last weekend - money well spent! (€135)
Ok so it was too early in the pregnancy to see much more than a tiny kidney bean, but she assured my all is looking well so far!
I'm only just over 6 weeks gone, I've to go back next week for a follow up scan where she hopes to be able to detect a heartbeat - cant wait!:D

I'm 14 weeks pregnant and had my first scan in the Coombe clinic in Naas Hospital last week (going public). I am going back in another 8 weeks for another scan, I was surprised at how soon after the first one it was. They are really good there.

It was amazing to see how defined the baby is at 13 weeks. I was shocked at how much I could see.:P

A friend of mine who is going to the Coombe (public) got a scan - they call it a 'dating scan' at 11 weeks.

The first scan in Holles St is usually around 23 weeks

Obviously if you are private, you will be scanned a lot more and scanned on your first visit - usually around 10 weeks.

You could always book a private scan for 12 weeks so you can have a pic to show people when you tell them!!
