Avast causing internet to stop working?

Avast has recently caused my internet explorer to not display any web pages and when i search its as if im not connected to the internet. I was on a site earlier which wanted me to download active x which was a div x update which I did and since then its started doing this. I uninstalled the divx but it stayed the same.

Id rather have the normal full avast protection on so whats causing it all of a sudden to do this?

I had this problem before with avg 8.5 update so i just uninstalled it and got avast instead....
