Ha ha, good man, there's a whole heap of trouble winging it's way to you in the shape of the next generation Renaults. Renault just keep on pushing the limits until they break even their staunchest supporters, good luck with that!:pac:

I agree,i know two garages that will not touch renaults. And a friend of mine was looking to buy a new car and his mechanic said if he bought a renault he wouldnt even service it.

Older renaults are ok in my eyes though.

I've a 03 Megane Coupe (new shape, the one with the fat ass) and it's a grand car. Nothing wrong with it.

Maybe you should try a good mechanic :D:D IMO any mechanic that knows what he's doing won't refuse a car, no matter what make it is

It's the fact that mechanics over here are only used to working on escorts and fiestas :D
New renaults are very much liked on the continent!
They're in the top 5 in almost every european country.
    hahaha

    Hmmm!
Renault is not to blame here if some of their fabulous models sometimes fail. All modern makes suffer from the same problem. Anything fitted with a computer and controlling a bunch of electronic sensors will fail. Why? The components are all made by a handfull of manufacturers and everybody is trying to produce a low cost car. You cant do it unless you skimp on design. Each car maker is pumping in the design requirements to the same vehicle design software and it spits out the ultimate model.
So its the era of the silly stuff breaking down no matter what it is you drive.
And they though plugs & points were complicated!

So what you are saying is they are built down to a price?Suppose thats what happens when you try to push design limits.

Its not possible to survive if you are a vehicle producer IF you try and re - invent the wheel. If I need a g/box I'm going to get one off the supplier shelf flaws and all. Look around and see how many engines are now shared accross makes. EG: A Peugeot Hdi in a Suzuki! Why spend money when some else has done so - its easier to pay the installation royalty for using the part.
I would take a guess and say that for each car or "Unit" as the makers like to call them costs about 2,000 Euros to manufacturer inclusive of labour, parts etc. Its like photocopying the first one is the most expensive.

Right, steering this thing back on topic :-)

I got a 480 recently but have to admit that i'm not 100% in love with it... I guess it's just not me. So if anyone out there would like one, let me know. Going cheap, or would swap for something odd and quirky.

When Mercedes were making the W123 and W124 models, the bean counters didn't get their way. The engineering that went into those cars was staggering(even the 190E). You could not engineer cars like those today as the cost of manufacture would be too great. So when the Bean counters did get their way, look what happened--W211--TOTAL CRAP---RUST IN PIECE.
Mercedes eventually acknowledged that they got it wrong with nearly all their late 90's/00s models. They even covered rust body repairs to cars 10 years old that had a full Mercedes Service History.

Totally agree with you there John... I've had a 1996 E230 and the build quality wasn't the same as the previous models

I had a Laguna as a company car, my mechanic Uncle said it was a lovely car to drive, looked good and had some nice extras.

He said if I'd bought it with my own money he'd have hit me though

Slightly off-topic, but what is it with modern cars and their flywheels? I have heard of Mk5 Golfs, Peugeot 407's, RAV 4's and Pajeros all needing flywheels at around 3 years/50 to 80K miles. I don't ever recall this being an issue with older stuff.

Well that's very simple to explain... Older cars are better built. That's why we're all here right? :-)

    Hello 2cv,
I'd be interested in the 480.
Don't have anything French to offer you at the moment. So PM your price.

around 100k..... it's also got a dpf (diesel partical filter) which will need to be replaced with its additive tank topped up also @100k ish
    .....
dmf replacment in a peugeot garage = average 1000-1400 euro....
dpf replacment in a peugeot garage = average 800-900 euro....
So................we the customers/car owners are paying for all the
    f-_K up's (eg-dmf's) and Environment improvements (eg-dpf's) out
    our pockets.....whats gone wrong.....:(

I've also drive a 406 td which has done 206k on its original clutch and
    flywheel....:)
I used to have the use of Peugeot 305 (non turbo diesel) back in the late
80's (parents) and it was very comfortable, solid, reliable without all the
electronic failures of the modern cars of today.....

Personally i think by mid 90's most car manufactures had mastered there
diesel engines to get a balance of economy, reliability, comfort and the introduction of the mod cons..e.g. cd players aircon etc....:)

but since then i think the have leaped alittle to forward to areas that are not yet mastered by the Tec's of today....

Sorry...but thats my rant of the night....:)

the new flywheels are usually split wheels with rubber in the middle, it's cos of having so many torques.

Had mine go on a 00 pajero. 2400 from dealer plus fitting. Paid 500 for one s/h, put it in myself, (big job) and moved her on fairly lively.
