Damaged gear cable - DIY fix or LBS?

So I got on my bike in work this evening ready to head out for a good training spin on this fine evening only to find my rear gears wouldn't change and I then noticed the gear cable was cracked open and damaged near the rear derailleur.

No idea how it happened. The internal main cable is still intact but the cables around it are all very bent and the cable is well out of alignment as a result. Gears initially shifted one or two max and then in desperation I fiddled around with the limit screws and overdid the fiddling with the cable tension bolts but none of it was making any noticeable difference as it was so far out of alignment already.

Is this a relatively easy one to fix DIY - what parts should I ask for in the shop if so? If it's a very fiddly one to fix I'll leave it into a local bike store but would prefer not to lose a couple more evenings of training due to having it off the road.

I live in Crumlin and work in Sandyford, so was thinking of trying Wolf's Cycles on Sundrive Rd first, then Joe Daly and possibly Hollingsworth Templeogue if needed. Would these shops generally be friendly towards doing repairs on a bike not purchased there (PlanetX purchased online) and any idea of the leadtimes for repairs at this probably peak time?

Bad timing for it to happen just as I'm finishing off preparation for ROK!

5 minute job, just call the shop and ask if they can do it on the spot ot within a day.:)

looks like some arsehole(usually on a BSO) locked his bike beside yours, they got entangled and thats the result of some over enthusiastic pulling.

Make sure your hangr is straight, may take a while to order a new one if they cant bend it back.

You can DIY but with all respect, from reading the above derailleurs and cables dont seem to be your forte. make sure you bring the lock key for your skewers if you do go LBS.:)

pricewise id say e2 for th inner, e2 for the outer and labour around e10.

Cheers for the insight Kona and yeh, I can just about manage the basics on sorting out slipping gears etc but this does look like something that falls outside of basic maintenance so I know enough to know what I don't know and this one is better to hand over to a pro.

Thanks for the suggestions Emty, hope Wolffe's works out well, would be good to establish a good relationship with a local bike store cos I'd give them my business when they're within a reasonable range of online prices, so hopefully the first date goes swimmingly! All the very best with La Marmotte by the way, I'll say it'll be one memorable experience.

As Kona said, a 5 min job but probably no harm to ring the shop before hand just in case they won't do it on the spot. Inner cables are usually around 2.50 and since back gear cables have little casing you should get that for 2.00. There's no way labour should amount to 10.00. I wouldn't expect to pay more than 10.00 for the whole job. If they're asking for more better buy the cable and learn to fix it yourself or else go elsewhere.
