VW Golf DSG Gearbox

Currently looking, and about to swap to a 2007 Golf Gti with the DSG gearbox but have had a few people tell me that the DSG gearboxes have been known to give problems and are very expensive to fix?
Any Gti owners out there or people in the Motor trade (Chris or others) that might dispel this rumour and put my mind at ease!
It's coming from a well known dealer so will have some comeback if there are any initial problems.

    Appreciate any help!

    Homer.

I've a 06 2L TDI Passat DSG with just over 104,000 km on it (56k when I bought it) and no problems so far.. if anythig the last service it got seems to have improved the gearbox (new software update I'm presuming)

I understand they are excellent boxes. I also understand that you would pay dearly should one fail, which is rare thankfully.

It's a very solid box, but it has not been around for that long, so I guess people are just scared at what potentially could go wrong.

I put 15k on one, no probs.

I know someone with 60k, also no probs.

    Excellent choice, btw.....

Sorry to ruin the positive comments.

We've 2 Touran 1.4TSi (140ps) DSG Highline's. The silver one had it's DSG box replaced under warranty within a year due to a horrific grinding noise coming from it. The black one (bought by a collegue) had the DSG Box replaced at a cost of approx. €2,500. This happened 6 days outside of warranty and VW wouldn't even entertain a warranty claim.

Neither vehicle had high mileage when the boxes went.

That said, I'm sure we have a good few DSG's that haven't had any issues, but they aren't totally bulletproof. Superb cars to drive paired with any of the engines (even the rattlebox 1.9tdi).
