Hi all, wife put 13 euros worth petrol in diesel car with about 10 Euro diesel left in tank. Noted her error and she then went on to topped up with 20Euro more diesel. What will happen next?

My advice is fill it to the neck with diesel and just drive on...

What car is it? Modern diesels don't like petrol at all. To the point where the injectors break. And it's lots of money to put right. Lots!

it all depends on the year i would fill the tank with diesel and it should be ok.if anything a bit of petrol mixed with diesel in older cars actually helps clean out the pipes if anything.Im glad it wasnt the other way round,if you put Diesel in a Petrol car ur engine wud be finished.

I don't think i would say that , what kind of car is it? an old (1990ish) car or a modern common rail (tdci/hdi/cdi.etc)If it modern car i would NOT drive the car, unless you want the dash to light up like a Christmas tree with warning lights ,and possibly have the car go into safe mode. petrol will mix with the diesel and cause the engine to detonate. this can hole pistons/bend cranks/snap timing belt etc....

I think you got mixed up there, DIESEL in petrol cars = smoke and hassle
PETROL in diesel cars= premature firing and possible ENGINE damage

to save your self a huge bill later on, drain the thank and bleed the whole engin!! i.e. take it to a garage!!!!!!

na no mistake,Diesel in a Petrol doesnt cause smoke in older cars.it actually the opposite,i do often put a fiver of petrol in a car with a 40euro of diesel before an NCT it reduces SMOKE

Thanks all, it's an '98 Escort TD. I will admit I once did the same myself to this car and a month later the fuel pump went west. Not sure if it was related but it sure put a hole in my pocket.

Thank again lads, I think I'll go with "fill to the gills" theory and post back later. I can just afford to do that. Bringing to a garage with high costs not really an option as the car, though I love it, is not worth the cost. After all I cant even lock the thing and the ignition barrel takes several attempts to turn the engine (although I do hear a little click like a relay)...Ooopps..keep that to yourselves!

Thankfully this is not the case. I put 30e diesel into a petrol '06 Forrester 2.0l turbo the other day, started the thing and drove 20 metres before it cut out. Tow truck to mechanics and had tank and engine drained (not too simple a procedure as he had to remove panels all over the place to access where he needed) and is driving absolutely fine now, like nothing ever happened. Thankfully. Still yet to get the bill though:(

if you get the tow truck covered under your insurance, I imagine you'll get a bill somwhere around €200-€250
