Going for a job and my degree is above requirement but my L.C. english is short of the mark. My lecturer advised me to explain my low english mark in my cover letter but what can I say?? I'm just not great at English but the job is purely maths so I can't really see why a high english mark is important. I think they're looking for someone with adequate communication skills. Any advice much appreciated!!

What does the job spec say about English - do they specifically mention what LC result you should have or anything like that? Personally I don't think there's any need to put down your LC results on your CV once you have some experience and/or a good 3rd level qualification - just mention that you have passed it as this can be a requirement.

It asks for a B3 or higher in both English and Maths at leaving cert and a 2.1 degree.

Putting reasons why NOT to choose you into your cover letter is just plain STUPID! Especially when employers are getting hundreds of applications for each role and are looking for any reason to reject you ASAP.

Ignore the issue in your cover letter. Use it to tell them how well-suited you are to the job. If you can, show some other evidence of how good you are at communications.

Put the LC results in your CV (ie don't lie), but don't draw attention to them.

If the LC really matters, you won't make it to interview stage. If it's a nice-to-have, then you stand at chance at least.
