Sorry but its kind of doing my head in all this talk of The Tour should be scrapped and all this crap!!
I am one person who thinks it should Not be Scrapped !
Ask any player what it means to wear the jersey and what it means to them to go on tour and ask players like Simon Geoghegan what he would have giving to wear the jersey!!

I am very sure if they had of won or even of drawn yesterday there wouldn't be as many calls for the tour to be scrapped, i have enjoyed the tour this year.
If the lions didn't lose 2/3 of the front row just five minutes into the second half and then lose both centres at pretty much the same time it would of being a different result.
Right from the start the tour has being unlucky with injuries, even before they left for SA they had injuries to key players that would of being very likely to start the tests.

Even though we lost, it shouldn't be scrapped. I enjoyed it immensly as I think most fans did and it evidently means a lot to the players given their reactions yesterday (both SA and Lions). Of course all of that is subservient to financial interests, but was this tour a loss overall financiall? I doubt it.

    To answer your question, no.

Ask Stringer if he wanted to be a lion.

It's human nature to downplay the importance of something you don't like.

In this case, we've just lost, so lots of fans are saying it's a waste of time and should be cancelled.

Wait til September or so before deciding.

Of course not, because then we wouldn't have lost

I don't think it's about downplaying the importance, it's more to do with the fact that each of the tri-nations teams has beaten the Lions over the last 12 years and we have now gone a record amount of games without a win (I believe).

I can imagine there coming a stage where the "brand" is not bringing in the cash and it will be written off.

And ask players from the 70s and 80s would they would have given to be a Barbarian. Now it's just a piss up for the lads, if they are even bothered playing. I'm sure they have a great time and that's brilliant - but it's lost most of its appeal and prestige.

While it shouldn't be scrapped the number of games/the gap in games needs to be looked at. If we won yesterday we'd be going into next saturdays match with our 4-5 choice props on the bench, our 2-3rd choice centres who'll of had little time together playing with Jones and a replacement right wing. The fact that next weeks game is at altitude as well will make it even tougher.

They should have a week break a some stae between the tests.
    1st Sat - SA test
    2nd Sat - Emering SB
    3rd Sat - 2nd test
    4th Sat - 3rd test

    or something similiar.

The big problem with the Lions is there's far far too much talk that goes with it (said he posting on the internet forum).

Everyone's a bloody expert across four countries about every aspect of the tour.

At the end of the day, they were exciting games and the Lions got very close to South Africa. Not a whole lot has gone the lions way and the series is over early as a result. Was still a great contest and very enjoyable though.

Just a thought, although the lions is a good idea but I don't think its working in its current format. One suggestion I have is to make it into a "North Vs South" thing. The British and Irish Lions vs The NewZealand/Australian/South African Sharks (or other name). A hybrid team of Our 4 countries vs a hybrid team of their 3 countries.
    There are some advantages:
    1. It will have a broader fan base due to 3 SH countries being involved.
    2. The lead up games will be against stronger opposition as there will be more first choice players available to play in the warm up games.
    3. It levels the playing field so to speak because both teams are hybrids.
    4. More games for us to watch (SH and NH play the provincial teams)

    Disadvantages:
    1. Loss of "History"
    2. More games (loss of interest)

Just thought I'd put it out there
    Regards
    Ian

I suspect that is almost in place with the AI. The issue here is that the Lions lost to just 1 SH team. Combined with ABs and especially current Aussies the winning margins might be bigger.

there is a couple of points to take into account when you're talking about the lions

first off they are always massive underdogs (always play away, just a group of 36 lads coming together trying to form a team, etc) and results tend to go against them

    nz 1977 lost 3 - 1
    sa 1980 lost 3 - 1
nz 1983 lost all test games
    aus 1989 won 2-1
    nz 1993 lost 2-1
    sa 1997 won 2-1
    aus 2001 lost 2-1
    nz 2005 lost 3-0

the reason the 97 and 74 lions are revered are they won!

in relation to all the commenst saying that the lions are a corporate entity. i read recently that the 2005 was the first lions to make money! the home unions used to absorb the costs of previous tours. now the game is pro the players have to get paid, i think the fee is about 30,000 for each player (i think i read that in the times lions supplement) 36 x 30,000 is alot hence why there is so much lions merchandise.

whe n thomand2006 asked if stringer wanted to be lion, well ask catfromhue would he like to be lion. he is not sitting here in his lions jersey and dsoesnt have the 3 living with lions dvds cos he likes red!

I dont think so... they would have the same problems as the lions... players from different countries trying to play together and politics etc

    +1

this is a major factor after all...they would face the same problem the Lions have with getting players together for just a few weeks before games
