The Importance of Swing Tempo?

    Hi,

Any thoughts on the importance of swing tempo? It's mentioned a lot when I watch golf on TV (Sam Torrance for example is always talking about tempo) and it seems to me that a consistent tempo has the potential to be a good source of consistent shots. To that end I was thinking of investing in some of the stuff on the web that allows you to download an MP3 / audio file which you can put on your ipod and use at the range to practice driver / fairway iron / pitch etc tempo. Anybody used any of these or have any thoughts on whether they are just a useless gimmick?

    Thanks,
    super_freddie.

Swing tempo is almost everything, especially if you have the correct fundamentals. I havent heard of what you speak of, can you enlighten me. It sounds very interesting as tempo is something I continue to struggle with.

    Hi,

    What I'm referring to is

    (i) A method to find the appropriate tempo for you - see

    (a) How to find your tempo at

    http://www.tempoinmotion.com/system.html

    or

    (b) Read the book 'Tour Tempo'

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tour-Tempo-Finally-Revealed-Instructional/dp/0385509278/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1246217594&sr=8-1

and you can also get something called a Tour Tempo Custom Report from the author - see

    http://www.tourtemposhop.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=TTCR

    and

(ii) Once you've found 'your' tempo, getting MP3's to use when practicing to give you an appropriate, consistent tempo -

    see

    http://www.thecourthouse.id.au/Misc/TourTempo.html (free :))

or there are CDs and downloads etc that can be purchased from

    http://www.tourtemposhop.com

    and

    http://www.tempoinmotion.com

So, I'm wondering - has anybody here any experience of using this stuff or are there any thoughts on its usefulness?

    Thanks,
    super_freddie.

Try watching Ernie Els or Retief Goosen on TV if you want to see good tempo in action. They are the masters. Whatever you do don't watch Tiger Woods - far too quick but he gets away with it because his timing is so good. Actually if you go to a professional tournament you will see most pros swing it far far easier than you would think. Their power is generated by technique. Now if only I could get it right myself:)

There is nothing wrong with Tigers tempo, its just faster than those golfers you mentioned. Nothing says a fast tempo is worse than a slow one, its a jerky, "tempoless" swing that causes issues.

Tigers swing is always slow back, fast through.
Nick Price was fast back, fast through
Couples is slow back, slow through.

    All good tempo swings.

Just for clarification, I wasn't suggesting there is anything ' wrong' with Tigers Tempo, he is afterall the best golfer in the world. That would be a ridiculous statement to make. I am just suggesting that some pro's are better to watch than others for the purpose of amateurs learning good tempo. Talking from personal experience I don't have the natural skill to get the clubhead square at impact with a quick tempo because my timing breaks down but thats not to say that a quick tempo doesn't work for all people. I would suspect though that most high handicap amateurs swing the club too quickly because they think thats the way to get power. Els and Goosen swing slowly yet still generate high clubhead speeds thats why I said theirs were 'good' swings to watch. By 'good' I mean good to watch for the purpose of observing tempo, doesn't mean Tigers is 'bad' I just personally wouldn't try to copy it, I would probably put my back out:D

I'm a fan of Freddie couple temp swing..after all...that kinda swing is fairly successful for me and im not coming up short by any mean, it's a good clean swing. It all in the mind for me, if i try to swing too hard, my body out of place and my brain cant seem to function with the fast swing!!!:(

A pro was trying to teach me tempo a good few years ago. His tip was to try to say on the backswing . . . downswing "Severiano . . . Ballesteros" and keep that rhythm.
"At the moment" he said, "Yours is more like "Tom . . . Kite"

    Still is, I'm afraid. :(
