were they all built in wexford, except the 87 D? there's an old p&t van in a field near me but it has a later different van shell to the one in your photo.

All i know is that the yellow one is a 1982, and the van is a 1988. The other 2 red ones remain a mystery.

Oohh! Stuff like this always brings me out of the woodwork. That '87 model looks like an actual ex Renospeed project (I could be incorrect) - If it is then its done right as those guys are doing famous work.

    Tip:
To get a quick rough guide check on the year of R4's try opening the air pan and on the baseplate you will usually find a Year and month marking in yellow paint. Yeah! I know its not much good if someone's changed the airpan but as i said its a rough guide. Also works on early R5's / 6's, some 12's & 18's.

Newer stuff does get even easier - with the introduction of plastic moulding and general metal casting its possible to approx the year based on the indented markings on the casting/ moulding. Example: look for a circular indented marking about 1/4 inch or 5mm approx. It will contain usually 2 digits like 96 with a circle of dots. each dot usually represents a month or week period depending on the method used. As I say its a rough guide but try it out. Take some plastic parts on your R5 search and find the marks mentioned compare accross 3 - 5 other parts. They should be within a reasonable age match.
Some key areas on your R5 are:
Glove box, Rad couling, Air pan, Steering rack casing, Steering column panels (internal) Heater matrix (internal) door trim (inc handles)

Renault 4 - great car. I brought home a diesel engine for a landrover in the back of my old 4 (RIP) no problem.

The strangest place I saw so many Renault 4's was in Tokyo. Even the occupants were dressed as French peasants, complete with extra long baguette through the roof.....:D

Oh, 624 NI where are you now ? 1975 (I think), that familiar mid red colour, no body mouldings on that model (4TL), skinny chrome bumpers, I drove all over the country in it, just loved it.... it was well into it's disintegration stage when I cooked it in a big way on the way down to Tipperary one spring saturday morning, blew the head gasket, was never the same after that and wasn't worth getting repaired, replaced shortly afterwards by a 14TL, RZR 583 (I think..) same colour, near enough but a different era compared to the 4. Happy days......

    Ritz.

Lovely pics, the Renault 4 was certainly unusal and quirky. You either love em or hate em and I have done both and I now appreciate the quirkiness in them, when I see a polo , a punto a yaris and a micra driving and do not see much difference in any of them.:D

Did I see that blue R4 in UCD this morning??? There was a lovely one in front of me this morning but I don't remember the reg on it. Pretty sure it was 87 though. Love the R4's!

The Ren 4 was a legend :D I had loads of them and we had the Vans too.
First R4 was a 67 3 speed and I use to work for Smiths where we sold them new :) What a great design! I love the simplisity you could take one apart with a 10 spanner :D The Blue one is lovely looks like a GTL had the 1100cc. I have a great story of sitting at the lights at the old Wax Museum in Dublin heading for Phibsboro. Now anyone that knows the junction knows the Church up ahead and the traffic goes around it. The first gear in a 4 was great you could spin the wheels all day and was great for traffic light starts:D This german guy came up along side me in ... an M1 BMW and we looked at each other and he laughed. When the lights turned green I shot off and beat him to the Church and he had to give way lol that was class and he broke his ass laughing and gave the thumbs up. So I have fond memories of that little car and its great to see a few still standing and not Rusted away. OH!! one more thing ....I use to lift the rubber mat on the new cars and drill 2 small holes either side in the footwell so any water got in it would drain away haha saved a few I think ;)
