    It's a common problem on Early E class's.
If you have any warrenty (like you bought the car recently) go back with it and get it attended to.

Thanks, it is not on warranty, I wondered if it might be a fuse, I am looking for some possible solutions before I take it to a garage.

If after a number of attemps it locks, its not a fuse issue.
More likey a dodgy lock mechanism. As I say, on early E's it common so if you go to a specialist merc mechanic he'll more than likely have encountered it.
Consider going to this forum and asking the question there - http://www.mercedesclub.org.uk/ - might even be a "how to" on how to cure it.

I have seen this with a 03 CLK as well. Most likely a faulty actuator , or a damaged connector. if you don't mind taking off the door card you can try taking a look at the connectors, and maybe changing the actuator.
