Ships' horns at night

Is it normal for ships to be sounding their horn continously at night? I've been hearing what seems like two different ships blasting their horns
in Dublin, one long blast every 30 seconds or so. I do know there are conventions for ships signalling when they are turning etc. but this has been going on for at least the last half hour. I've never noticed it before, except on New Years, either it's down to it being a clearer night, or there's some unusual manuevers going on tonight. Damn if I can't sleep anyway.

I often hear this on foggy mornings.

Also, when I was a kid, I used to hear what sounded like an air raid siren all the time in Artane. Was quite spooky.

I was awake all night with these ships, aarrgghh! They were so so loud, think it was very misty and that's why they were doing it. I live in the Gasworks and can only feel very sorry for people living even closer to the sea. One is still going on now and it's past 11.

Indeed. Despite being flamey cancer ball time there's one solitary horn going...

It happens so often I don't notice the sound.

When I do, I quite like it. T'was and is quite foggy.

I wish I lived closer to the sea, just so I can listen to foghorns! I find their dull tones to be very relaxing.

Yeah me too. I can hear the waves from my bedroom (and obviously the fog horns too).

OP - definitely fog horns you were hearing as they were going off around my way too.

I love the sound of the fog horn at night - makes me think of the sea, which is calming and peaceful.

I love the sound of the fog horns in dublin.

True story - one night when i was living on campus in ucd i heard the fog horns outside, while i was watching John Carpenter's 'the fog' creepy but awesome at the same time!

Also, saw an episode of that programme 'coast' a few weeks ago and they were saying that in england and scotland they don't use foghorns anymore? i think thats really sad, they sound so cool!

yeah I hear them all the time too! I was pretty freaked the first few times I heard then... now I just blame it on a zombie outbreak that the government is covering up as a bombing ....:( I'll go now...

Do you know it's possible to hear a foghorn from Wales? Well not so much hear but you can pick the frequency up quite easily, if it's pointing in the right direction with optimal conditions such as wind etc.
