Xp won't start at all

    Visiting friends at the mo and having trouble with their pc. When you switch it on you get the black screen giving an error message and the options to start in safe, normally or last good settings. No matter which option you select nothing happens. There's a countdown but when that runs out nothing happens. Have tried hitting f8 but that brings up the same options and the option to restore or reinstall. Would prefer not to reinstall. Restore asks to select account and then asks for an administrator password. Have no idea that this could be? Any help would truly be appreciated

    Does he have the original xp cd? If he does then it might be worth using it to go into the recovery console and running chkdsk to check for disk errors.

    Or if you want to wipe the admin password then you need to create a boot cd. From here
