    Brilliant band.
Saw them supporting Idlewild about 5 years ago and was blown away; still puzzled as to why they're not headlining festivals at this point, although their last album got great reviews in the mainstream press.

I'm also puzzled as to why they're not bigger in the mainstream. They were getting played on Phantom loads ( was the song named Guilt Complex? Gilt Complex? ) and I assumed they were a new breaking band, it was only after having the pleasure of playing with them that I realised they were old hands at the game and had a load of tunes to back it up.
I guess it's just another example of how making it big in the music industry is an awful lot about luck.

Also saw them support Idlewild in 2005 (pretty sure Roddy's missus is the lead singer) and I wasn't impressed at all tbh.

But would you not put them above the likes of The Kooks, Scouting for Girls etc that have less in the bag but have far more mainstream success?

Not really because imo they simply aren't very good. Just because they haven't gone mainstream doesn't make them automatically better than bands that have.

FWIW, I actually really like the Kooks first album, commercial or not. Sons and Daughters on the other hand were very underwhelming and uninspiring.

The Bassist is married to Roddy Womble.
I think they are great and the last album was dead catchy. Saw them for 2nd time at EP 2 years ago and they were brilliant. Would love to have caught them again but not had the chance/time.

I got 'This gift' after hearing guilt complex. I liked them for a while but haven't gone back to them too many times or got any other albums. They are alright for a big band but would say they are cracking live

I wasn't saying they were automatically better because they weren't mainstream, but the OP was puzzled as to why they weren't more successful.

What I was saying is that, IMO, they are better than many bands that have "made it big", based on the music not the fact that they haven't. They aren't one of my favourite bands or anything, but when I compare them to the some of the current English indie kings I'm left wondering.

I saw them playing Other Voices a couple of years ago and they were excellent. I recommend their album The Repulsion Box. There’s not a bad song on it. The singer and drummer used to tour as part of Arab Strap.
