Hey all, probably not such a big deal for all you experienced cyclists on here but set myself a challenge to climb Howth Hill (north Dublin) on the bike and did it today :-) delighted because i didn't think I would be able to do it.

Cycled from Clontarf and out to howth climbed the hill (more a mountain to me) going up the right side with the sea on my right took me about 15-20 mins to get to the top and about 40 seconds to get down the other side going at 60km/hr

Distance covered 23.69km and i did it in 59 minutes so very happy with that :D

Building up my experience and stamina for a boards cycle sometime ;)

Sorry for the big head but had to tell someone....

    Neon

    Well done OP!

So you approcahed from the Sutton side? Tis tough, though a pure stroll for many around here.

If you're up for it, try to approach from Howth side, shorter but steeper.

Also, there is a hill in Howth village to the right of the church.
Gotta be honest, I wonder if it's even possible to cycle it. I struggled to walk and push my bike up it :o

    Thanks for all the replies

I'll try it from the other side as well..I know that hill you are talking about to the right of the church  maybe in a few weeks I'll try it.

Felt great after it so thats a bonus. Makes you want to go back out and do more for sure.

I'll enjoy a pint or two tonight for sure.

The only thing I can say after it is the part going down hill I've started to think what if I had come off the bike at that speed. Is it normal to go that fast or should I take it easier the next time as there are cars on the road and possibly one could pull out of a T junction and hit me...

Well I've gone over 80kph on my bike coming down a hill, you won't spontaneously come off or anything, still be careful tho, come off at that speed and they'll be scraping bits of you off the road for a week! If you see a car even begin to start thinking about pulling out of a side road in front of you, shout at the top of your lungs, as a precautionary measure.

Fair play to you Neon, I felt the exact same about 6 months ago when I did the same :) Then went up the steep side the next week, if you keep it up you'll be doing multiple laps of it without any bother, I've been doing up sutton, then up howth, then back up sutton recently.

You'll be flying it in no time............in comparison to most normal people, but not some of the machines that frequent this forum, we just have to accept we'll never catch them ;)

Fair play! You'd be suprised how (as I discovered yesterday) once you've gotten around Howth a few times and gotten used to it, it isn't all that much more difficult to take on some of the easier bits in Wicklow.

Did the same trip myself for my first spin a week ago. Up the hill three times from three different directions...don't ask me how I managed to do it. Got home and went straight to bed!! It was worth the pain ;)

A big thank you to the two boardsies who coached me through it!!

    Well done neonman.
Did very similar this year, went from barely getting up from Sutton, to doing repeats, to doing North + South ascent to finally doing repeats including the right of the church.
You'll be amazed at how quickly you improve when starting out.

Pretty soon you'll be doing the hill climb TTs out there :)
    They are amazing fun!
