Sorry for the dumb question, but I'm a iPhone rookie! Is it possible to put my own ringtones on the iPhone? Or can I only 'create' a ringtone from a track I purchase on iTunes?

1.Choose what ever song you have in your iTunesmag-glass_10x10.gif library.

2.Listen to the song and choose a section you want.

    3.Right click.

    4.Get info.

    5.Options tab.

    6.Choose a start time.

7.Choose an end time (no more than 30 seconds in length fron the start time).

8.Play back, are you satisfied? Yes proceed to 9. No fine tune it then.

9.Right click on the song and select convert to AAC.

10.Go to recently added fined the ringtone you just created.

    11.Right click select copy.

12.Go to desktop, right click, paste ringtone appears.

13.Right click, select rename. rename the extension from M4a to M4r.

14.Right click, select cut. go to you iTunes musicmag-glass_10x10.gif folder find ringtone folder, right click , paste.

15.Double clikc the new ringtone. iTunes opens and the new ringtone plays.

16.Connect iPhone to computer, go to the ringtones tab in the iPhone. Make sure the new ringtone is ticked. Sync. Enjoy your new ringtone. 2thumbsup.gif

You want to fine tune it? Add some fade or some silence in the end?

    1.Download Audacity 1.3 beta.

2.If the song is bought from itunes it has drm protection.

3.Rip it to a blank CD (preferably a rewrite one) it will be in wav now.

4.Open it up in Audacity, fine tune it.

5.Export it out to wherever you like.

    6.Import it to iTunes.

    7.Convert to AAC.

8.rename extension to M4r and you know the rest. hello.gif

good info, just a note that the first time you do it you won't have a ringtones folder, create it, put the m4r in it and then add it as a folder in Itunes, you then get a ringtone option in library

Is it correct that it doesn't work with tracks purchased on iTunes?

I have noticed when I get to step

9.Right click on the song and select convert to AAC.

there is no convert to AAC option

However there is a create ringtone option - problem with this I believe is that it doesnt work outside the US

Does the latest version of Itunes not have this covert to AAC option?

    Cheers

I have it anyway in itunes 8.2, it's righ under convert id3 tags. try a few different songs/albums in case it is a specific codec that doesn't give the option. I don't have a create ringtone option though, I think that is only for songs purchased via itunes and the create ringtone will be a further charge

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,462 ✭✭✭TheBazman

Yeah I have convert ID tags, then create MP3 version, then create ringtone....strange

what format is the file you're trying to convert?

  • Subscribers Posts: 16,610 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

create mp3 version will work fine too I think, or at least it will give you the aac option once you have an mp3 version to right click on.

mostly mp3 - although I have 1000's of songs and randomly picking any of them gives me the same options when I rightclick

nope - tried that - I have a 12 second clip chosen, right click and create mp3 version, then I right click on this 12 second created clip and it's exactly the same options I get

I dunno dude, I see mention of the same issue online but no matter what song I pick I get the AAC option. I'm on itunes 8.2.0.3 on windows.

If you copy and paste to desktop what file extension do you end up with?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,462 ✭✭✭TheBazman

It's still mp3 on the desktop

Anyway not to worry - I found Audiko which does the same thing albeit it's a bit around the house way of doing it

    Cheers

    Glad it was helpful :D.

As far as sms tones go there is no way of getting new ones unless you jailbreak the phone.

I don't know why Apple doesn't let us use custom sms tones, tre bizarre.

What is in your options settings?

    1.Go to edit

    2.Last option should be preferences

3.Import settings (should be in the middle of the page beside "when you insert a cd")

    4.Import using

Do you have AAC as the option or MP3?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,462 ✭✭✭TheBazman

    it's on mp3 encoder

Ah I just changed it to AAC encoder and now I have the option in the drop down menu

Cheers - looks like problem solved

Click on File - Add Folder to Library and select the folder you want.

When you add the folder you created on your hard drive to the iTunes library, you won't see the folder in the library, but whatever files that were in it should just show up in the library along with all your other music.

Not sure if you are having the same problem as I had - took me a while, but finally figured out that you need to delete the original AAC file you created from iTunes before importing the .m4r file. Like I said - after several attempts this finally got it working for me!

Ok I can see my 30 second clip in my i tunes library but I can't copy and paste it into the ringtones folder?

Sorry for the old thread bump. I got to step 12, but when I try to rename it I get no option to change it to the m4r version. Any ideas on how to do this?

Also I don't have a ringtones folder, where is it located?

    Thanks

    any ideas on this guys?

  • Subscribers Posts: 16,610 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

just edit the file extension, directly. i.e click on it and overtype.

as for the ringtones folder, you create it yourself, see my note above.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,404 ✭✭✭Goodluck2me

foudn a solution, go into folder options and click show file extensions.

  • Subscribers Posts: 16,610 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

ah ok, difficult to change the file extension if you have them hidden alright!
