Don't know if this works but looks simple enough, all you have to to is go to it on Safari on your iPhone/Pod Touch.

Can anyone tell me why tethering is considered to be such a big deal on the iPhone? I don't have an iPhone at the moment (but I have a 32Gb 3GS on its way to me. Yay :D), but my current Nokia can be used as a modem, and pretty much every phone I've had for the last couple of years was the same. This is fine and all, but it would cost an absolute fortune to use. Why is there such a big fuss being made over the iPhone having this capability? Am I missing something? I've seen people mention that it's 'free tethering', but surely you have to pay for your usage no? I'm very confused

Reasons for big fuss & excitement == All the iPhone plans include 1 GB of data per month, so it's totally free to use it as a modem as long as you don't exceed 1 GB.

Another reason for the fuss is that O2 and other iPhone carriers seem to be determined to charge their users extra for tethering. So screwing them on that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

The only issue about using this solution is that you cannot have MMS as well. Seems to be either of Tethering or MMS. Unless of course you use PdaNet and I'm talking about Vodafone here, not O2

So (on vodafone) how do you "turn off" MMS then? Just delete the settings?

No, I can't tell you why, I have no idea why Apple delayed this facility so long. I have used most of my HSDPA handsets as modems for ages and am glad that finally the iPhone has joined the party.

Several of my accounts have data bundles.

But what I can tell you is that usually bluetooth tethering with most modern Nokias and other makes is a pain in the bottom: frequent disconnection and crashing is the name of the game. BT tethering on the iPhone has been rock-solid, though USB for once seems preferable as it has the added bonus of a) charging the phone and b) treating it as though it were an ethernet connection thus connecting with the absolute minimum of fuss.

Tried this for Iphone, i'm on vodafone using ISP data bundle. When i go to http://www.jellysms.com/blog/enable-...nd-with-30-gm/ and click on the vodafone link, and then restart and click on the tethering button it says i have to contact my carrier??? Anyone else get this?

I think that there is a bug there where you cannot have both MMS and tethering using that method? I'd suggest you delete the new profile settings you downloaded from the JellySMS blog, restart the iPhone, download them again, make sure that the MMS part of the settings are blank and see if it works.

Thanks Civil Ex, but thats still isn't working. removed the profile, restarted, reinstalled profile and still not working.

My original set up was this:

    Cellular Data
    APN isp.vodafone.ie
    Username Vodafone
    Password No

Then i installed the jellySMS blog profile and it changed to this:
    Cellular Data
    APN hs.vodafone.ie
    Username
    Password

hs.vodafone.ie was also in the mms and i also deleted this. Still not working:(

    Anyway other suggestions??

EDIT: tried going through this route to, but still says when i press the Tethering Button, i have to contact my carrier

I also downloaded the profile. Now, I haven't actually tried it yet, BUT: I noticed in 'settings' for the tethering profile that the apn is live.vodafone.com.... That cannot work, right? Usually with vodafone only isp.voda... works!?!??

A couple of points on the above:
    - for anyone using the Jellysms method, it will work first time or eventually with fiddling with it (for most people first time) and might need a restore to get it going
    - it sets up the APN as hs.vodafone.ie. You should manually change this to isp.vodafone.ie as only Business tariffs (might) allow the use of the hs APN without additional costs
    - the help.benm.at method can set up the live APN. This will not work for the majority of users unless you have the proxy.pac hack working, but you can manually change the APN to isp.vodafone.ie
    - the 3.1 update (currently in beta only but due out generally shortly) is rumoured to kill this method.
    - if tethering is important to you and you also want 3.1, you will probably need to jailbreak and use PDANet

Does 3.1 stop you installing carrier settings off the web? That's a bit much.

I used the http://help.benm.at/ method to enable tethering on my iphone 3g firmware 3.0. It points out that you may have problems with MMS after installing the .mobileconfig for tethering, but to just reset your network settings to get MMS working again.

However this is not working for me. Still without MMS. Is there a way i can get my MMS back and keep tethering as well or is it one or the other? Can i manually input the O2 MMS settings into the iphone? If so can anybody post them? Thanks.

Nevermind. Got the MMS settings from the O2 forum. Everything working perfectly now.
