Ford Fiesta

Hi I drive a ford fiesta classic and it cuts out all the time on me when I am coming to a stop. I got it serviced 6-8 weeks ago and it has been fine since until now. The timing and alternator belt were changed on it at the service but a screw came loose so the alternatos belt snapped and had to be replaced. Since this happened the revs have dropped to .5 on it and nows it cuts out. Im just wondering has this got anything to do with the change of alternator belt or was the timing just cocincidence. I have had this problem for ages and I used to disconnect the battery cables and it would not cut out for a while. The car cannot be plugged into a computer cos its too old. Can anyone help me because the car is driving me crazy. i have discussed whether it could be the idle speed control valve with the mechanic and he said no. Thanks

Its not the idle control valve according to the mechanic. What do you mean by the timing?

Well has this only happened since the timing belt was done? wat year is it? engine size?

Its a 96 1.3. Ive had the car about a year and the problem was always there. I got it serviced and it was fine. Then the belt snapped because it wasnt tightened enough so got it replaced and now its cuts out again. Maybe the timing is just cocincidence.

Did your mechanic check the idle control valve? its a common fault

If your any way handy with tools, just take off the idle control valve,

clean with a soft cloth and some WD40. Might just do the job.

I don't think the timing belt was changed as it doesn't have one! It has a chain, but unless it was very rattley it probably wasn't touched.

This is not true. It has an EEC-IV ECU which can be read by old proprietary Ford diagnostics, probably not that common outside Ford dealers though.

Anyway as others said the problem is most certainly a dirty or broken idle control valve.

Idle air control valve or a collapsed vacuum hose... Drove a fiesta once with the hose collapsed and even my own focus had it too... made it idle very erratic

Listen for a loud hissing noise... Id have to say though, it really does sound like the iacv

Everyime I go to the garage with it it comes back ok for a while. This has been an ongoing problem for a year. maybe it is the idle control valve even though the mechanic said it was not. I think I will have to bring it to another garage as I am getting nowhere in this one as it never cuts out in front of them.

I had the idle control valve problem with my Fiesta, what I found out is when parked in neutral if you rev it a lot and quickly let go of the throttle it will cut out (or almost cut out - battery and oil lights will come on etc.). After a couple of years of getting it cleaned out it's starting to happen again with my car. You may have to buy a new one altogether, though I don't think they're expensive (deffo <€50) and they're easy to fit.
