Why would we need another one out there?

There are two out there in that area already that they cannot even fill as it is. Jetland Centre and Coonagh Cross Centre. The last thing Caherdavin or in fact Limerick in general needs is another chain of empty glass/concret retail units in the suberbs. Lets try and fill what is already there first.

    • Knock Arthur's quay and make a central plaza for markets, fun activities and a focal point where people meet. Something like Eyres square. Replace the failed park behind the tourists office, and build a 10 storey retail, recreational, office building that will create the hive around the central plaza.
    • Pedestrianise O'Connells street.
    • Improve the street frontage and Georgian fabric
    • Build more tourist friendly maps/Signs to show the city's distict such as the English town which is not always seen by tourists as its seems cut off from the city centre
    • More trees
    • Bulldoze William street.
    • Turn Cruises street into a cafe culture area.
    • Build the Cinema and retail on Bedford Row
    • City Orbital made official
    • Renovate the Railway station and improve Parnell street.
    • New 25 -30 storey high rise's in the docklands
    • Improved water marimtime facilties on the river Shannon.

    Redvelopment and improvements
    to
    • Catherine street
    • Back streets from Williams street to the Railway station
    • Parnell street
    • William street
    • O'Connell street.
    • MAJOR improvement to Nicholas street
And a new city park designated somewhere near St ohn castle

Widening of Childers road and grade separate the Parkeway and finish the Shopping centre

1 Put Richards Harris' statue on the shannon bridge roundabout (bet Frank McCourt gets it :()
2 Refurbish Patrick, William, O'Connell St & Ave, Denmark, Ellen, Parnell, Roches, Mallow, Glenthworth St, Arthurs Quay and The Dock rd etc.
3 Do something sensible with Wickham St William St Junction or just put a roof on William St and make it pedestrian.
4 Knock the old tax office (Sarsfield house Francis St) and build some nice apartments 20 - 30 stories will do oh and add a riverside development.
5 Dock road outbound two into one lane is a joke it should be two lanes both ways.
    6 Gardai on horseback
7 Condell road speed limit should be at least 80k up to lower Shelbourne road junction and 2 lanes both ways........more to come

1: Have a Mayor that is elected by the people.
    2: Demolish William Street/Opera Centre/Arthurs Quay/Old Dunnes
3: Special rates incentive for independent stores
    4: More bins/litter wardens/street sweepers
5: Fire the city planner/corporation and start over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,905 ✭✭✭steveon

    1. Encourage people to shop in town. Provide incentives, cheaper parking etc.
Instead they pedestranise the streets and remove all the parking. They done up thomas street and left tiny loading bays....this is rediculous and makes doing business impossible and it is unfair in my opinion..
    2. Redevelop old sites- prosecute or take over if owners refuse to. As already been said get the opera project moving, khock the old dunnes stores and maybe arthurs key, and make the opera the first thing ppl see when coming into the city..
    3. Add more bins as previously stated their are hardly any and where they are they were provided free to the council and splashed with advertisments to pay for them.
    4. Get rid of half the traffic lights on henry street, and stop using 2 different compaines in the county suburbs and city and filter lights, like they said would be done years ago, I for one and tired of sitting at lights for 2 to 3 minutes whilst no traffic is coming from the other side.
4.a Make the 4 way traffic lights system back to two they serve no purpose.
4.b Move the newly installed zebra crossings back a couple of yards from the ridiculous locations at roundabouts all over the city....Im amazed there hasnt been a fatality yet.
5.Encourage entrpreneurs to promote the city, the newly established Limerick City tour is fantastic...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,283 ✭✭✭Deedsie

Id like them to set up an old town new town kinda system like in other european cities. Old town around the castle designated area for toursim activities and a new town for shops, nightclubs etc.

And I would just once love to see the Gardai intimidate some of the scum bag elements who spoil any chance of tourism in the city.

First of all, as agreed by people here, Limerick City centre is UGLY. The suburbs have changed dramatically but the poor city center? Uck....its dirty looking and unkept.

Thats a horrible thing to say, but its true.

    1. Knock the Cahill/May/Roberts building near the Granary. Think this might be done as part of the new opera house, but jesus like its taking years to do this.

    2. Traffic system on O Connell st needs to be looked at or regorganised. Too many traffic lights.

    3. Regenerate the old georgian buildings. Who ever owns them should be responisible for their upkeep. Also, I think cobble streets in this part of the city would give it a different, olde worlde feeling. Would be great. Just have a look at some of the streets like this in Brussels.

    4. Last year I would have said the ugly BoI building, but they seem to be doing this.

    5. General cleanliness and tidiness of the city i.e. more bins, more people cleaning out the bins. Looking after shop fronts. repairing street pavement. Also, you know when they construct a new building and 2 or 3 years later it starts looking shabby-this makes me so mad. Why cant they up keep the buildings?

    6. A general market. Again, I would have said this last year as a suggestion and they seem to be doing something about this now (arent they creating a covered market?)7. More flowers, more trees. A few trees outside Pennys doesnt count.

    7. Williams Street is a disgrace. Council should be ashamed of themselves.

All of the above could also provide much needed employment.

Can this link be sent to the County Council?

Some great suggestions so far, sadly the recession will slow a lot of these but some things we can definitely work on.

I like the idea of putting the Richard Harris statue in the middle of the Shannon bridge roundabout, a lot more people would see it and it would save it from valdalism,

    Here here Berty!

More street cleaners - and make them work early mornings - same for bin collections for the likes of mr binman.

Cycle lanes in the city not outside the city and physically separated from roads.

    Improve Nicholas Street.

Cafe in Peoples Park next to or adjoining City Art Gallery.

Corporation could consider hiring people who are enthusiastic about their work.

After the tunnel is finished i would do the following

    1) Pedestrianise williams street. Pedestrianise the rest of thomas street. Pedestrianise o'connell street to the block before aib. Change the road layout behind arthur's key to both way traffic to accomodate the new city centre layout

    2) Get rid of all traffic lights. Whenever there is a match on i love limerick. Every driver acts so much nicer on the roads, free movement of traffic, people pay much more attention and welcome the responsibility.

    3) Re build williams street. if you look past the ground floor the street is a horrible patchwork of shabby buildings

    4) Allow the new cinema to be built . Its a joke having to drive 20 min to the other side of the city to go to the cinema

    5) Encourage more use of the shannon. Get the shannon fisheries to finally allow the loch to be used. It is a travesty that they still will not authorise use of the loch, a shocking waste of a great resource!

    1) Melt down Richard Harris statue. The 5ft Burger king, surrounded by plaques littered with grammar mistakes, is an insult to his memory. IMO, if they wanted to depict a film character, they should have done a 7ft-10ft Dumbledore, complete with a glowing tip on the wand. The tourism this would bring to the city would make it worthwhile :D Also, imagine that MFer staring down at you as you leave supermacs bleary eyed on a sunday morning at 2am.
    2) William street regeneration needs emergency priority.
    3) Castletroy needs its garda station ASAP.
    4) Zero tolerance on nuisance crimes in city centre, the saturday hoodie brigade are very offputting to both locals and tourists
    5) Knock watergate flats and redevelop area as a cultural hub. Cafes, restaurants, pubs etc.

Alot of my suggestion have already been stated

    1. Make more use of the shannon. river cruises, floating restaraunt, etc.
    2. Hire more street cleaners and add more public bins.
    3. Create a venue to draw large music acts. This is being done with Thomand park.
    4. Get the opera Centre completed ASAP
    5. This is not just for Limerick, but the whole country. Increase pub opening hours to 24hours. I think this would remove the crowds and anti social behaviour from town at 2-3am on Saturday night. It's been done successfully in other parts of the world.

    1. Pedestrianise, as previous posters have said... We'll wait and see though, previous councils have been pretty much anti-pedestrianisation. I'd keep it as a core area though, From O'Connell Grill up as far as maybe Cecil Street. Pedestrianise the full length of Thomas Street, William Street up to Wickham Street junction, Denmark Street, Ellen Street, Sarsfield Street, part of Catherine Street

    2. a) Encourage a dedicated cafe/restaurant/pub vibe around pedestrianised Thomas Street and Catherine Street. With high competition prices should be kept low enough to allow a meal out act as a viable alternative to a night on the sauce. Encourage alternative and entertainment-focused small clubs (eg jazz/blues, some sort of intimate live gig/comedy venues for small, and particularly local, upcoming acts) to develop tastes and to shift the focus away from consumption of alcohol and on to entertainment.

    b) Offer a wider variety of recreational activities in the city centre, including, but not limited to the cinema (which could have foreign film/classic screenings), especially in the evening-time and also without age restrictions so that they are accessible to teenagers as well as adults. Late-night disco bowling, karaoke, pool hall, etc.

    3. Foster a street culture with (free) open air entertainment, especially aimed at kids and families. This would work especially with a dedicated covered market that is in the pipelines, which I also think is key.

    4. A more cohesive, reliable public transport system. In the long run I think a tram system would be great for the city and environmentally friendly and would sit in well with a pedestrianised city centre and commuter suburbs.

    5. Right now at this very present moment, creating employment is the single biggest priority that needs to be carried out in the city. All of the above would help with that.

1]Stop immediately anymore stupid&grandiose projects like the Oprea centre.Demolish the entire Ellen St block and turn it into a MINIMUM Charge car park. IE 10cents an hour.At that price it will be always full and paying.Open 24/7,it will get more traffic off the streets.

2] Get competant town planning and traffic management personel whose ideas extend abit more than plonking roundabouts and traffic lights at every junction,[IE the most retarded traffic light system at The Strand]
,and are capable of getting the ALL traffic lights to go GREEN all at once from The Strand to the Top of William st. Or All green the length of Henry St.[Also to get dozy drivers to MOVE when it happens, but thats another days work]

3] Get rid of the non used bike lanes on Childers Rd,and revert to a four lane traffic. It IS a major traffic artery after all.Ditto the Bus lane on link rd to the 3rd bridge.Or at least that off peak it reverts to a traffic lane, not the stupid 24/7 bus lane with No busses on it.

4] Immediately enforce a BAN or heavy taxation on all "Harses & Sulkies".
Where the FK are we ...ancient Rome or 21st century[more or less] Limerick??Everyone else on the road pays taxes for the privilige. Why should kids be allowed to run and abuse animals and block up our streets with these contraptions with no lights,or saftey features.Animals do not belong in city traffic.

5]Develop the rail system,[we already have the track to do so] from Moyross to Mungret with stop offs on this circle line at all major neighbourhoods. It would then connect up with the proposed Shannon rail [or whatever] link.

6]QUIT pedesterinising every street in the city centre.Small busisness HATE IT!!Ask the people in Nicholas St and thomas St.It has put up their rates, and actually makes their deliveries and pick ups more difficult.
Thats tue for people delivering goods commerically or people trying to pick up things from the shops. Not only that ,puke stains and dossers, hoodies, druggies and alchos are attracted to hanging around these places.
7] Get the pubs open to hours that suit them[with restrictions obviously in total residental areas].Less binge drinking and aggro then once the novelty has worn off of being able to drink 24/7 and the dedicated alchos have died off from their own stupidity or over indulgance.
8] Get rid of the taxi row on Sarsfield St, and William St it is dangerous and a traffic blocker.Give over the entire block of lower Cecil St parking to two taxi ranks.Should be more than enough.Taxis should be also street hailable to cut down the overfill out of the rank lines.
9]Get the Gardai moved out of Henry St.The traffic situation is a disaster there outside the station. With civvie and Garda cars parked all over the place. How anything will clear there if there is ever a real emergency is beyond me...Move the revenue out into a new empty building somwhere in the city, and move Henry St down to Sarsfield House.

10]A total ban on all new construction projects until all empty shops ,buildings etc are filled, and all unfinished projects are completed[IE the Parkway, and Henry St old an Post complex]

11] Move the An post sorting office and collection point to somwhere more user friendly than the Dock Rd,for those who are carless, aged or disabled.
