I often watch that carta phoist programme on tg4 which I find very interesting as I have a lot of these postcards, both John Hinde and Cardall they are much better than some of the rubbish from Valentine and Dixons.

This particular postcard has been reprinted and rebranded express delivery which I dont like, but where is the location and when was it taken?

There was a documentary about Hindes' photography - Hindesight

I think some articles and books were published around the time, similar to the 'Shadows' series that aired in 1984.

Try googleing - you can also view it in the RTE archive if you're arsed

I saw it on tv but that was years ago and I dont know how to access RTE archives unless its online? I did buy a john hinde book yesterday as an antique, printed in the 80s, there was a good selection of pictures in it, but there was another version of the pony express. The above picture has been photoshoped........its all mud underneath the red frame and the horses head is facing the opposite way so there must have been an automatic camera running to take loads of shots.

He doctored most of his prints, and staged many of the scenes. I think the documentary told about how he kept a saw in his car to chop away branches, and made the red-haired girl change clothes before shooting the kids with the donkey.

The archive is out in Donnybrook, but its difficult to get access, usually restricted to producers and academics.

The national photographic archive holds prints; I havent seen them myself so I'm not sure if they contain any notes (like Welch or Clonbrock) in any form. You might get lucky with the catalog info and find a location

The location for the postcard is on the Cork/Tipperary boundary. The year was 1962 or thereabouts. The road is the original cork-dublin Mailcoach road between The Mountain Barracks in Glenduff, Mitchelstown Co Cork and Ballyporeen, Co. Tipperary.

It took you 10 months of round the clock research to find that out?

no, it only took a few minutes. Some people I know recognised the card and the driver. All I have to do now is find the exact spot on the road, theres a mountain top visible in the background. Nobody makes haystacks these days and the road wasnt tarmacadamed at the time.
