Hi guys, I started Muay Thai in Bridgestone bout 3 weeks ago, I'm a totall beginner to martial arts and all is going well, however, when I throw a left hook or uppercut I'm getting sharp pains in my hand. The pain seems to be at the end of my index metacarpal, towards the wrist. The pain dosent last for too long after striking but I don't want to break my feckin hand or anything.
I'm sure I'm just punching wrong or wrapping my hands improperlly, but if anyone has any advice, or experienced something similar I would really appriciate you input,
    Thanks, Richie.

Richie its most likely a combination of both those.

One of the reason's a 'normal' gym usually won't have punch bags is because of the high risk of injury to novices hitting the bags wrong.

I'd suggest you have someone experienced show you how to punch properly, how to wrap your hands properly and advise you on the type of glove to use.

In the mean time I'd suggest you don't hit the heavy bag, and whatever you do don't be tempted to either hit it bare knuckled or with light bag mits.

I'll be down in bridgestone next week. I'd be happy to show you how to wrap your hands. As for punching: Ask the boss man to correct your technique. As makikomi said, you should definitely not be feeling pain like that, but it's common enough if your hands aren't wrapped right or you're hitting incorrectly.

In the mean time, rest it up.

    Thanks guys,
Yeah I'll defo rest it untill next week, and ask for some advice in the club, the last thing i want is an injury so soon into training, so I'll stay off the bag untill I get it sorted. Hopefuly I'll see you there Khannie, cheers.

    Hi

As said above just ask whatever coach is on the night your next down. I think its probably a combination of bad hand wraping technicque and not keeping the fist level when contact is met.

The beginners classes are busy at moment but you can get down early or ask the coach straight after class, we wont bite, well mayby some of us wont:p
